    Thanks dbf for the comprehensive account of the treachery of Sergeant Joyce. I wonder how the RAF employed him for the rest of the war after his "escape" from Germany

    Sergeant M J Joyce of No 61 Squadron was well known by the veterans of No 61 Squadron at Hemswell who contributed to the account of his treachery in the Hemswell Association privately published circular, The Imp.

    From his service number 580715,it appears he joined the RAF (Direct Entry) in August 1935 in the category for Pilots. Observers and Cadets. However on the loss of the Hampden, he is shown in the crew configuration as being a WO/Air Gunner or perhaps an Air Gunner. If that is the case as the Direct Entry shown, he must have remustered to a lower aircrew designation.
