Bio by Graeme Clarke who is researching the Walsall roll of honour Ernest PARKES Sergeant 4916916 59th Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps, Royal Armoured Corps Died in France on Tuesday 1 August 1944 Ernest was the only son of Daniel and Lydia Rose (nee Yeomans) Parkes of 149, Bloxwich Road, Walsall, his father predeceasing him. He was educated at North Walsall School and was then a glove maker by trade working initially for G.H.T. Madeley and Company Limited in Station Street, Walsall but later for Whitehouse Cox and Company Limited, also of Station Street. Joining the South Staffordshire Regiment before the war, Ernest later transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps at some stage. He was drafted to France with the infantry at the outbreak of war and evacuated from Dunkirk. Whilst training in Yorkshire Ernest married Marie Yvonne Warrington at Cleveland, Yorkshire in 1941, she being a member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. They made their home in Redcar and produced a daughter who was 3 years of age at the time of her father’s death. The 59th Regiment landed on the Normandy coastline on Monday 24 July 1944 and began patrolling the Rauray region. Within a short space of time the regiment took over positions from the South Staffordshire Regiment, the Regimental History recording that as the positions were subjected to intensive mortaring. In early August 1944 an advance was made out of the bridgehead with the regiment taking over reconnaissance duties south of the Noyers-Villers Bocage road advancing towards the River Orne. Ernest was killed in action at 26 years of age. He is buried in Fontenay-le-Pesnel War Cemetery in Grave II.D.20. Cheers Paul
Is that a typo on his CWGC record ? 56 Recce maybe ?? Cant see a 59 Recce chap being inTunisia. Unless they have listed his old unit & he got posted ? http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2620817/HEMMING,%20RONALD%20THOMAS
Strange that Owen 59th (Staffordshire) Reconnaissance Regiment landed in Normandy late July 1944; 59th (Staffordshire) Division broken up for reinforcements August 1944. 56 Recce in Tunisia late 1942/43 This chap died October 1943, 56 Recce already in Italy Found a chap (L/Cpl H Cole) listed Dec 1943 in B Sqn, 56 Recce with a number (4543951) pretty near to Ronald Hemming (4543994) Done a check of the 56 Recce Appendices for 1942/43 and cannot find his name anywhere
Owen this is another one that I am looking into, I have another 3 or 5 Recce one that I am also looking into. Lesley the number block is for the West Yorkshire Regiment 4523001 - 4601000. As those 2 numbers are close there is a distinct possibility that they both transferred together. Cheers Paul
