Bio by Graeme Clarke who is researching the Walsall roll of honour

    George HARRISON
    Trooper 4036195
5th (3rd Battalion, The Tower Hamlets Rifles) Regiment,
    Reconnaissance Corps
Died in Sicily on Friday 6 August 1943

    On Pelsall War Memorial

George was the son of William and Mary (nee Gallagher) Harrison of 65, Norton Road, Pelsall.

He was married to Agnes Edith Foster at Wednesbury in January 1941 and then resided with her parents at 103, Coronation Road, Pelsall.

As a boy he attended Pelsall Church School and then found employment with W. Arnold and Son Limited of Bradford Street, Walsall.

An officer wrote to the family explaining

“he was killed instantly in his armoured car during the great thrust that drove the Germans up to the north of Sicily. He suffered no pain and was found sitting in his car.”

George is buried in Catania War Cemetery in Grave III.H.12. He was 26 years of age.

A stained glass window in his honour was unveiled at the Pelsall Parish Church on Sunday 9 March 1952 being dedicated by Canon S.G.B. Exham, the Precentor of Lichfield Cathedral. The window, presented by his parents, depicted St. George and the Dragon. George had been a choir boy at the church in his youth.

    Cheers
