Hello all, (and Diane in special). An incredible job you are doing.

I am currently working on a book of Remembrance of soldiers buried in Milsbeek and Ottersum, https://sites.google.com/site/rollofhonourmilsbeekottersum/home I don't this alone, I do get a lot of help but I will call for any help I can find.

One of the issues is the following: on the 16 of February 1945 the 5th Bn fight from Hommersum to Mull. (this village can't be found anymore, I believe it is motorway 57 now).14 Coldstream Guards die on that day, there. One of the is Guardsman Stebbings. His family has a letter from him saying he just crossed the river at Wesel (the Rhein). This sound not plausible since the guards were in Hommersum, but it could have been reconnaissance work. I read you posts on page 1 and Stebbings is mentioned there. How did you find out Stebbings was one of the men killed there?

For all of you, I live in Gennep, I know the area well, Gennep area is Operation Veritable area (roughly 8th of February - 20th of February 1945). When you need help or photo's of graves, please call on me.

I will wonder around this site more, but when you can help on the 3rd Bn Irish Guards killed on the 16th of February 1945 (I read a huge part of in on this side but maybe one has some other information) or on the 4th and 5th Bn of the KOSB's. You do me a great favour.

I understand the book: a distant drum from Pereira is one of the best books about the Coldstream guards in that time. Does one know any for sale, less that 150 US$ or 250 AUS$.

    Thank you Paul

My uncle William (jack) woods, who is approaching his 90th birthday in May, currently living in Devizes was in the 5th batallion Coldstream guards. He fought towards the wesel bridge and we are currently researching and info re battle raging around Haus loo and seeking any other servants still alive from the same battle.

Hello and welcome to the forum
I've put the Bn's War Diary for that year on this link, there are some sketch maps, and the diary itself gives rough co-ordinates
War Diary: 5th Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS, Jan - Oct 1945

This linked post (a transcript of the Bn newsletter) from the same WD thread has him listed as 4 Coy, which could help narrow things down a bit.
War Diary: 5th Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS, Jan - Oct 1945

CWCG have documents relating to concentration of burials after the war.
    Casualty Details
    DYER, HENRY
    Rank:Guardsman
    Service No:5735196
    Date of Death:24/04/1945
    Age:21
    Regiment/Service:Coldstream Guards 5th Bn.
    Grave Reference: 5. F. 8.
    Cemetery:BECKLINGEN WAR CEMETERY

This document in the CWGC link above gives co-ordinates for Henry Dyer's original field grave location, near Sittensen.

Have you been in contact with RHQ? - they could have some battle reports of the day as well as notes from regtl. battlefield tours...

Thanks Guys this is fantastic news, and interestingly I have located a WD map of Zeven, judging by the first contact 4th Company had with the enemy in the wood using the map and google maps we think we have found where they were mortared by the grid ref.....although it would be nice to confirm the german positions in map form whether hand drawn or printed.......we have planned a visit to Zeven once we are sure of the position where Henry fell and to lay a wreath....from the family to you guys that have helped so far with this we cant thank you enough......

The story is quite a sad one.....Henry Came from Birmingham......he came home on leave prior to the battle of Zeven.......knowing the germans were finished and it was almost the end of the war young Henry who was only 21......didnt want to go back......his mother and my friends grandmother told him he must go back......a week later he was killed.......his mother never got over the loss to her dying day.....

I find it my duty to help compile as much information for my mate as I can.......and once we visit the field take some photographs to bring the research to life and share with you guys for all your kind help..........many many thanks it truly means a lot

I hope you can narrow things down further. I've only managed it once for my own father's stories (3IG) - was for field grave he dug for a mate.
This GAD file, held a National Archives Kew, it might hold some further details of enemy positions in Intel reports or sitreps:

That's a sad story indeed. Would appreciate if you can post updates, particularly interested in any photos of the area... and any of your mate's uncle. Always great to see a face put to any of the names from these rolls.

    Good luck
