Hi Can anyone advise as to where the 5th Grenadier Guards sailed from to land at Anzio? Tunisia, Sicily, southern Italy? Thanks
It was: Reading on I expect this was part of Naples: Both quotes from a short thread: Anzio, another day... Wiki helps: From: Castellammare di Stabia - Wikipedia Note different spelling of the name. There maybe other threads here, I did not look further.
See GG History, vol 2 The Grenadier Guards in the war of 1939-1945, by Nigel Nicolson and Patrick Forbes v.2.
Hi, Diane (dbf) “beat me to the draw” by posting the above link but for completeness here is Volume 1 link - The Grenadier Guards in the war of 1939-1945, by Nigel Nicolson and Patrick Forbes v.1. Unlike CG history on hathitrust you can’t download the whole of GG history but you should be able to screen copy pages of interest. Steve
ANZIO 1944 | U.S. Army Center of Military History The armada set sail from Naples on 21 January 1944 Naples is in the Southern half of Italy. Castellamare de Stabia (David bfpo #2) is also mentioned by Alan Whicker as a point of embarkation for Anzio. Google Maps
Thank you for all your replies Grandfather involved at Anzio believed 9th February1944 during battle around the Gully area with the 5th GG Part of Capt Holhers company. Capt Hohler won a MC I believe in this action We have a letter from him to my grandmother after my grandfather went missing during the fighting My grandfather was eventually established to have been Injured, captured and imprisoned at Nienburg (part of Stalag X1A)
