Hello researching a Sgt who was wounded on either the 24th or 26th April 1945 with 5th Btn Cold Gds - can any one tell me what was happening on these dates ? thanks Ian
I havent got Coldstream history but this may help from the Grenadiers history pages 242-243 to get you started. April 24 Promptly at 11 o'clock on the 24th of April the attack on Zeven began. The 5th Battalion Coldstream Guards , supported by tanks of their 1st Battalion , broke out from Wiersdorf... The Coldstream , with their force split up on either side of the Wiersdorf-Zeven road , had the advantage of firm ground to travel over, but country was very open and they suffered casualties from mortars and small arms fire. ....the first parties of prisoners soon began to drift in.....They were delighted to be taken prisoner , and by 4 o'clock in the afternoon had surrendered the entire town to the 5th Coldstream and Grenadiers. That's all I can see mentioned of the Coldstream , hope others can help.
Have a look at this post of Diane's. MC recommendation for an officer in 5CG for his actions on 24th. http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/14995-5th-battalion-coldstream-guards/?p=168245
Hopefully some kind member will post the relevent pages of the battalion war diary soon. I'm sure there a couple of members out there that have them.
Sorry I'm late to this post - but I have been going through my grandfathers effects and in a book I found his Army From B notifying my grandmother that he has been injured on 24/4/45
