Hello, I just got given my Grandad's dogtag and found he was WOII in the 5th Recce. A friend who is an expert on WW2 has said I should read "Wheeled Odyssey", but I cannot fine it anywhere, can anyone help? My Grandad was Leonard Alfred Wiggs, I also have his beret badge which I cherish. Any info or help would be wonderful, thank you
Hi The IWM does have a copy - Wheeled odyssey the story of the Fifth Reconnaissance Regt., Royal Armoured Corps | Imperial War Museums (iwm.org.uk) His BMD information is on Ancestry, I presume you know all that. Can't find anything else. regards Robert
Lellert - welcome to the forum Member Recce Mitch will be able to help you with your request. I am sure he will be along soon to help. I think he has a digital copy he could email you. Lesley

Welcome to the forum. According to "This Band of Brothers" (A history of the Reconnaissance Corps of the British Army) by Jeremy Taylor, under 5th Recce there is mentioned: WOII L. A. Wiggs MID. However I can find no entry in the London Gazette to support this, perhaps others can? As indicated above there are plenty of threads on 5th Recce, worth doing a search with various keywords, here are a few: http://ww2talk.com/index.php?search/11160705/&q="5th+recce"&o=relevance&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=75 http://ww2talk.com/index.php?search/11160710/&q="5th+reconnaissance"&o=relevance&c[title_only]=1 You can send a private message to recce_Mitch by starting a conversation with him - click on his avatar.
that is great, I will look, he is mentioned in the gazette, my friend found it for me, I will look at the other threads, thank you!
I think I am to new to the forum to send a PM, (that's what I have read!) Perhaps you can start a conversation with me, as I can't with you. thank you so much!
Dear Paul. Thank you so very much, will have laptop access once other half is home to read it! I'm very grateful!
Hi there, I'm unsure of the manner in which to approach this so i apologise for the way this is presented and worded. My Great Grand Father was Sergeant Philip Punter of 5th Reconnaissance Regiment, Awarded the Military Medal for his deeds in Sicilia and Himberg (Unsure of Spelling). I have the letter of recommendation for the Military Medal with signatures from Superiors and Brass. I have an original printing of "Wheeled Odyssey", however, my estranged mother in all her wisdom took it back from me after it was given to me by my Grandfather, Sgt. Punters Son, this will be returnes to me one day im sure however i was wondering if anyone had a digital copy or similar that i could get a hold of in the meantime. Thank you in advance.
Per Adua, Recce Mitch our in-house expert, who is here regularly, on the Recce Corps has a copy, this thread indicates he will help and the IWM (Imperial War Museum, London) has a copy of the book to. It is not in the National Army Museum collection. There are two other book on the Corps: Reconnaissance Regiments RAC [1939-1945] Note the original thread author, Lellert, has not logged on since December 2021, so the result of his research is unknown.
Welcome to the forum Per Adua. Great to have another recce on board. I can help with "Wheeled Odyssey". Message me with your email. Cheers Paul
