Festing's forward to 36th Division, North Burma 1944-45 by Geoffry Foster:

    36DivForward.jpg

An account from the same booklet of him in action at Mawlu (in North Burma's 'Railway Corridor', October 1944). The platoon he took over was from 'A' Coy, 1st Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers; not mentioned is the fact that he also acted as stretcher bearer for the platoon's wounded on the way back:

Living up to his nickname again, 'Front Line Frankie' was almost killed on 6th May 1945 while attempting to get forward to an infantry patrol that had become pinned down by MG and mortar fire on the Kalaw Staircase, east of Meiktila. From 36 Inf. Div. HQ 'G' War Diary:

I came across a good photo of Festing from around the time of his move from Eastern Command to replace Loewen as commander of FARELF (1956).
