Does anyone know anyone who was with this unit Belsen,April1945 or pehaps info on the Unit? Thanks Alan
Hi Alan and welcome to the forum. There's quite a bit of info on Military Government Detachments on the net (Have you tried a google search?) including a book called Belsen: The liberation of a concentration camp By Joanne Reilly that mentions the unit. Link below: Belsen: the liberation of a ... - Google Books# Can I also suggest a search of the BBC's WW2 People's War that has personal accounts like the one below: BBC - WW2 People's War - THE LIBERATION OF BELSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP Can I ask what your interest is ? Cheers Andy
I am trying to trace for a lady a Polish Jew who came to UK in about 1942, served 618 MGD, then left UK for America in 1948. I have looked at the Internet, but found nothing of interest. I have ordered a book from the library called 'Belsen Uncovered,' (written by officer in 1946 who attended Belsen) apparently there are references to the unit. The name of the Polish man is/was Bernhard Klugmann. Trouble is, many changed their names on joining the Army, I we are not sure of a name! I have ordered some War Diary records on the Unit, 618 MGD from Kew Archives, but really need to look at ALL files to see if there are any photos or references to the the sought person. Thanks
I can't remember what it's called but the passenger lists for ships are available (online I think). I think that would be a good bet if you know his name.
I think (Not wishing to be the bearer of bad news) you will struggle with this one not knowing him name. I suspect the NA at Kew might be your only hope assuming the unit had a war diary but thats a bit of a long shot that he would get a mention unless he an officer. Andy
Hello Alan, Welcome to the forum. Andy is right in that the War diaries do not usually mention names of ordinary ranks unless mentioned due to medal awards or meritorious conduct. But all is not last as the month end reports are appendices attached to the diary and show all kind of information with names and ranks, such as promotions and transfers. I wish you well on your research. Regards Tom
