My Grandfather Arthur Pengwyn Jones from Bangor served in 241 Bty. 69 Medium RA. He was born 1916, enlisted in 1932 aged 15 and demobbed in 1949. He re-enlisted in 1949 into the 5th Regiment RA was discharged in 1953. He passed in 1984 and I am waiting for his service record but I also have a service record of a soldier from the 242 Bty. 69th Medium for Arthur Jones 902656 if anyone wants to see it?
This photograph was taken in Italy 1943, post Battle of Monte Cassino. Arthur sat front central (bandage right hand). RA Matador in the background. I'm attempting to identify the war memorial monument behind them. Any ideas who could identify this?
Do you have any details on whereabouts he moved after Cassino? You might be able to piece his route together, then work out which towns/villages were on it? It'll be tricky, a lot of the villages and towns around there have massively expanded since. Trying to get some details of my Godfather's time in Italy together myself for a photo trip next year. He was 242 battery and a Bangor lad, Glyn Owen. This thread's been very interesting so far!
You need to get hold of Gary Tankard. He will get you a copy of the Regt’s War Diary. That Diary will follow the movement of the Regt in great detail. Gary goes to the National Archives regularly and his rates are incredibly reasonable. Regards Frank
