I've got a picture showing 722 AW Company RE 1940. My Uncle Vic is in there somewhere and I thought it would be nice to get some commemorative info for a picture/plaque of him.
I did a bit of research and have now got a death cert, but it looks like I need his army number to access his service records.
Does anyone know how I would get hold of his army number? One problem is that he died in 1985 and all his belongings have long since gone - apart from this picture.
    Thanks,
    Don

The MOD forms state - Service number OR date of birth

His death cert should show his date of birth

    Hi Don.

There is a RE database on FMP

Post his full name here and someone with an account might be able to find his service number for you.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Gus. Is FMP the Find My Past website?

    Thanks for replying TD.
I saw that as well but when I downloaded the part 1 and 2 application forms it mentioned that a service number must be included so I wasn't sure.
I've got his death cert so I think I'll send it in and see what happens.
    Cheers,
    Don

Ah I see what you mean - they have obviously recently changed the forms as now it reads, or maybe they have not ttransferred the details onto the new format exactly as they should have

Please note: Service number and date of birth must be included

It was possible to have either a 'pdf form of the sheet or a .odt, but it seems you can now only have a .odt form of the sheet and this change seems to have changed their wording as well.
When you send off your form it might be worth pointing out the above and ask the question as to why the change - perhaps if you receive a response you can get back to us
I note even on the .odt version of the form that they still have an asterisk against service number and also against date of birth. Finding a soldiers servie number is difficult as if they were never mentioned of gazetted the its an impossible task, so its odd to see whats written
