Whilst you are waiting, in June 44 6th Armoured Division by-passed Rome to the east, passed through Poggio Mirteto, liberated Terni (13th June) then on to Perugia (20 June) via Todi and Marsciano. After that, some hard battles in the area between Perugia and Lake Trasimeno (20-30 June). Out of the line for a few days, then back in at Cortona and then up route 71. Where this road meets route 73 (see my map) they were held up on their way to Arezzo at Olmo on 13 July. From there, they descended into the Val di Chiana.

This is all my old 'stamping ground'. I lived near Lake Trasimeno for 25 years.

  4. Hi Everyone,
Thank you to those who have helped me so far with my research on my uncles time in ww2.
    Just a question regarding medals.
I know my uncle would of had a British War medal ww2 and an Italian Star, possibly an African Star too, but I need to find this out.
I’m slightly confused to whether he would of had a defence medal, did all serving army personnel receive one of these as well as the British War medal.
    Thank you
    Nancy

    Hi Nancy,

rather late to your thread. Have a look at the files below. Not sure if you are aware of this book, History of the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers 1925 to 1961 By Brigadier C.N.Barclay,C.B.E.,D.S.O. Gale & Polden Ltd 1963? You need to read on from the 14th on page 141. I've also included a couple of maps & a illustration.

  6. Hi Stu,
Thank you for the information you have sent me, it’s great for my research, just what I’ve been looking for.
I’m not sure how easy it would be to get hold of this book on my the 16th/5th lancers, but it would be perfect for my research to we’re my Uncle would have been with the regiment in North Africa and Italy. I will enjoy hunting around for a copy of this book.
    Thank you again,
    Nancy

Hi Nancy, i should have mentioned that you will probably struggle to find a copy of this book.. You may have obtained one? If you have, then i guess it will have not been cheap?

I came across my copy whilst looking for something else.

I did find another book that you may wish to purchase? I can't vouch for it- others may be able

The Scarlet Lancers. The Story of the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers 1688-1992 by JAMES LUNT. Published by Leo Cooper, 1993. You could try AbeBooks.co.uk Prices range from £20.00 to £50.00. Some of them are abroad.

    Regards,
    Stu.

  8. Hi Stu,
Yes, I have had problems finding the book, I thought I might, I may find it by luck in my travels. I’ve seen the other book you mentioned, The Scarlet Lancers, so I may go for that, I’ve been looking on ABEbooks.co.uk.
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards
    Nancy
