My father, Leslie Herbert, was in the 357th all the way through the war, he kept meticulous scrapbooks including annotated photographs and his own sketches. I'll look through the Europe one and see what I can find. He ended the war as a L/Bombadier - I still have his medals & spurs.

Hello all ...and greetings Attacker2 !
Great to see the photos, I hadn't seen the war diary for the Nijmegen campaign . .... Photomint51 , have you seen the regiment war diary for the D Day landings and the accompanying 'Defense' map? .You can trace where 357 landed and the various points where they went into action during the day as they moved inland.

Hi Guppy - hope you are keeping well.

Photomint 51 - thanks for the new photos - great to see. Great to see Harry Almond in those pictures. Please keep them coming. Do you have any photos of the guns? 'A' and 'F' Troop photos I have - but would like to see some of the other Troops top firm up the list of vehicle names.

Just a few pictures I already had on the system, the image of Dad in front of the tent I suspect to be pre-war (I've still got his spurs), the movement map he drew, as with the sketch on the TLC. The actual map is just a section of the original D-Day map, but shows the movements in those first few days.

Just checked up on whether there has been any activity on the 90th recently. Went to Nijmegen last October on the anniversary of my Dad being wounded near Marienbosch. ( 1st catholic school in the area built in 1923 ). High ground ( relatively in Holland ). Got the War Diary and co-ords from Drew - thanks. Father wounded and discharged unfit 6 months later. A Troop GPOA in the Sherman variant Aurora. Found a photo of the back end of Aurora with the SPG's but can't remember where. They were parked up on parade ( might be Oliver Perks photo ). Gnr Callander , A Troop was killed as my Dad was wounded so I visited the War Grave cemetery.
The photo with Sgt. Bill Arthy, which was posted, brings it into perspective, because Bill kept in touch with my Dad after the War.

    Sheldrake All over the place....

    Wonderful...

Did you know that Major Oliver Smedley MC was involved in radio pirate war in the 1960s between pirate radio stations and acquitted of murdering Screaming Lord Such's manager?

Smedley was a founder member of "Keep Britain Out!" (of the EEC)

His wikipedia entry is incorrect. The citation for his MC has the wrong month and he seems to have been awarded it for 11th June when he was the only FOO with 6 Green Howards at Cristot.

Some great additions here - PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING! I am having a few 'IT' related issues at the moment so time on the web is limited. I need to pore over the new images from Photomint 51 - thank you so much.

I noticed that 'Above and Beyond - The Craftsman' is now available to watch on YouTube. The story of REME Craftsman Wally Harris who won the MM at Mons-en-Pevelle while serving with the Regiment. If you ignore a couple of dodgy uniforms (and perhaps the largest GS Cap ever seen...) its a decent watch. Audio recordings of Wally Harris' story with the 90th can also be found on the IWM Collections Website and are worth a listen.

Wally Harris MM died in 2014.

    Hello Oates
You mention other photos of RA units taken at the time . Thought you might like a copy of the photo of 'E' Troop 465 Bty (I may have already posted this before) taken in Nov 1945 numérisation0004.jpg although they were based in Lunen , Germany. My father officer in front row.

Just been sent this by Paul Middleton.
I didn't have the name but did have the census number so was able to match it to this Regiment. I assume by the name the Sexton belongs to D Troop.
