My great-uncle fought in Iwo Jima as a Marine and was a seargent, because he commanded like 6 men. Anyways, he told me a japanese banazi jumped into a tree with blades and knives that my uncle's group put in as a booby trap. O, so he told me that he had to take a cliff near Mt. Kurabachi and Surabachi... which one? I forgot, the main one though. So, he battled, lost a few men, but got the cliff. The Japanese came in swarms and counter-attacked, and he held his position and defended the counter-attack. He recieved a medal, nt the distingushed cross, but sumething else
Your great-uncle is brave. He recieved a medal, nt the distingushed cross, but sumething else That Star medal?
Did your great-uncle ever mention Ira Hamilton Hayes? He was one of the six Marines that raised Old Glory after the Battle of Iwo Jima. This was immortalised in photo and also on the statue. Ira Hayes was a Pima Indian. After the war he was feted at speaking engagements. He became an alcoholic and died in 1955 at the age of thirty-two on the Pima Reservation. http://coleraine-battery.tripod.com
No, butI have read the book Flag of our Fathers, and I know who he is. He's the Indian. He had many troubles. Look for the book, and if you look, there is one edition that has on Chapter 8, a picture of my great uncle helping the wounded man. He's a short guy. make sure you see the edition with the picture on chpt. 8.

I think I would have!

Iwo Jima was a nightmarish battle for the Marines, and justifiably a Corps legend. I will look for the photo in my copy of the book.
Yes thanks for the story, trumpetplayer. I'm sure you are proud of your great-uncle and rightfully so!
Ok, no problem. I am proud; he also fought in the Marshall Islands, and he told me how the coral reefs were dangerous. He said that there was a bomb that was so powerful, it shook the island. it was powerful. Did you find the photo KiwiWriter? he has a medal (not the distingushed cross, I honestly don't know) and a purple heart. He was lying on a beach for some 11 hours, on the frontlines. Some shrapnell hit his shoulder, and suprisingly, he didn't go the the States. If I remember or ask him more info, I'll tell it.
You sound very justifiably proud of him, Kid. I wish my grandfather had talked and told his stories. Kitty.
