Whenever I see the Recce Corps badge I always think of what one of my lads said in Bayeux Cemetery once, "Dad, why have they got a christmas tree on their graves?"
Nice of you to think of us Andy. A very nice photo. Apparently from what I have read some units did call the Recce Badge a Christmas Tree! Probably never said it to their face as the Recce were quite a hard bunch by all accounts . Regards Tom
Same Title - found this in Kranji Cemetery, Singapore when I was surfing for another image. cheers, phil War Grave V
I was given a load of photos to scan and copy for my website by ex CSM Jimmy Petrie, 5th Camerons, last weekend, at the Vught liberation celebrations. Amongst them was this one. On the back it says; "The Seargeants and warrant officers of the 51st Highland Recce Regiment before they left for Egypt June 1942".
Great picture. I have recently traced two veterans of 51 Recce and likewise have been loaned a number of photos and documents to copy. I have a very similar group shot of 'C' Squadron. These photos were taken at Aldershot. In due course I should be able to put a few names to the faces but in the meantime can say that the two senior officers in your photo (with sticks) are (left) Lt. Col. E. H. Grant (C.O.) and (right) Capt. C. G. Kelway-Bamber (Adjutant). (Both men were originally from the A&SH, Lt. Col. Grant having also served in WWI. Kelway-Bamber later rose to the rank of Lt. Col. and commanded 1st A&SH in the 60's). Tom.
Excellent shot, terribly gutted I missed a copy of the 53rd Recce's history on eBay a few days ago... it went for surprisingly little.
