Hi, It seems this kind of item isnt unique but at least this one had a happy ending! War memorial rescued from eBay and another Anger over eBay sale of memorial (From The Northern Echo) Kyle
This is interesting from the first link posted by Kyle-not sure if it's true though? Coun Millar told JMU Journalism: “The item should never have been on eBay in the first place – they have a ban on the sale of war memorials.
Whenever I see something like this, I wonder if there are any non-commemorated names on it (there very often is on most memorials). If it goes to a private buyer not bothered about research, their chance may be lost, at least for a while. Again.
Wolverhampton Archive has a number of interior photographs of the church at its centenary in 1963. I can't see the memorial unfortunately. Interior of Trinity Methodist Church, Compton Road p/3021 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I wonder if there is any record of the terms by which the memorial came to be in the club ? Was it their property to dispose of ?
This is interesting from the first link posted by Kyle-not sure if it's true though? Hi Drew, The Daily Mail are/were running a campaign to protect War Memorials but I dont know if this fall into their criteria.Sorry I cannot access their website for some reason Heres another quote you may be interested in comes from a similar story The War Memorials Trust is calling for action to stop anything from war memorials from being traded or sold. Frances Moreton, director of War Memorials Trust , said that although it had no hard evidence that items had been stolen, there was legitimate concern over the sales. “Unfortunately it is increasingly the case that war memorials are being offered for sale at, for example, auctions, on internet auction sites, at architectural salvage yards or in antique shops.” “Buying and selling war memorials creates a market value for such items which could lead to more theft of such pieces for commercial gain.” “We have mixed results contacting sellers. Some immediately give memorials to us and apologise for any offence caused. Others are more belligerent,” she added. Another link Compton Road Memorial Kyle
Fingers crossed it went to a good home and it wasn't the seller getting pissed off with the criticism.
Just had this reply....Why don't I believe him This item as been removed as I don't want it to end up in the wrong hands it is still for sale and my price is still the same as long as I know where it's going to be displayed
Just to let people know it is a factory works memorial, which I have a photograph of on my website. Cable Street Mills War Memorial. Regards Doug
Well it looks like the Memorial may well be finding a home in Wolverhampton, I had a response from warmemorials.org which contains the following: War Memorials Trust strongly believes that war memorials should not hold a commercial value. The sale of such items encourages further sales and on some occasions memorials have even been stolen to order. We know that in a number of cases individuals become the custodians of memorials for legitimate reasons. Often because the original site is being demolished or redeveloped and arrangements have not been made for the memorial to be relocated. In such cases War Memorials Trust recommends that a new public location should be found for the memorial within the local community. We can support this through offering advice and approaching relevant bodies, as well as offering grants for any repair or relocation costs involved. We know from experience that it can be difficult to identify a new home for memorials and hope that by offering our assistance a new home can be found. We have unfortunately been involved in a number of cases where such items have been offered for sale through eBay. In this instance we have contacted eBay to make them aware as the sale of war memorials on the site is a breach of their policy, although not everyone is aware of this. This means that the item can be removed and the seller made aware. We have also contacted the seller directly with our advice and to offer our assistance. You may be interested in our helpsheet on the selling of war memorial which I have attached for convenience. We hope that through such action a solution may be found which allows the memorial to be returned to the community it commemorates and once again be placed on display for remembrance ensuring that those commemorated are not forgotten.I hope that this information is of interest and shall keep you informed of any developments. If you have any questions or become aware of any further cases, please do not hesitate to contact us. The seller gets his money but in my opinion much more importantly the memorial will remain in Wolverhampton.
Excellent news JB and well done to the War Memorial Trust for stepping in. WMT are getting a bit of a bashing over there now for getting involved. Job's not done yet until the deal is done. Still uncertain.
Job's not done yet until the deal is done. Still uncertain. I got the same response and have to admit that's how I read it.
