Hi folks, looking for any information regarding Able Seaman Patrick Moore, age 24 (born about 1916), of Down House, Hunter Street, Liverpool. Newspaper reports say he was found unconscious on the street on 24 December 1940 and later died from a fracture at the base of his skull. An open verdict was returned by the coroner.

I'm guessing he was Royal Navy, but not sure. He is buried in an unmarked public grave at Ford Cemetery in Liverpool. Can't find him in the 1939 Register and have been unable to find any further records. He is not listed on CWGC so far as I can see.

He looks like a possible non-commemoration, but would ideally like to have more details before taking it any further.

Thanks Temuji, I have those already but am hoping to find some details of his service.

I cannot see a Patrick Moore listed in ADM 104/134 (Register of Deaths of Naval Ratings). This would suggest he was Merchant Navy.

I cannot see any MN records for this man but not all MN records are online. He could be RN and I agree with Tim he is not listed in ADM 104, but he could also still be non-commemorated RN.
Although the majority of 'able-seamen' would be covered by either of the above services, it is not always the case. An able-seaman could be found on any vessel that goes to sea for example small tugs fishing vessels, etc, although some of those vessels may have different terminology in play, 'deck-hands' for example.

From working my way through the CWGC lists of naval and merchant deaths, I've encountered a fair number of RN ratings whose deaths aren't listed in ADM104, so I wouldn't use that as a guide for him not being in RN.

Took a punt on the DC but unfortunately it doesn't give any details that aren't covered by the newspaper reports.

Not having much to go on, I've tentatively identified him as Patrick Moore born at Liverpool on 13 June 1915. His father was James Moore, a merchant seaman, and his mother was Mary Ellen Moore, formerly Carr. I can't be certain that's correct though.

In any case, TNA were unable to find a Royal Navy record for him, nor anything in BT 382/1251.

Unfortunately as he died in 1940, BT 382/1251 would not have been any help to you in this case as this series of MN records only begin in 1941.

Ah, that explains why nothing was found for a few men. I don't suppose there's anything else I might try?

    Hi Paul,
TNA would not have his naval service record, if indeed he was in that service. They would only hold it if he was old enough to have joined prior to circa 1928 and continued in service at the start of the war. This was not the case as he was only 24 when he died so any RN service record will still be with the MOD.

Sorry, I meant the MOD. I made that request back in December but they couldn't find anything. Of course, I may have the wrong birth details, but I don't have any other leads.
