Semantics. The Taliban have won and quibbling over what to call that defeat might soothe bruised ego but not change the fact it is a defeat. Afghanistan is ranked as 170ish in a table of 180 most corrupt countries.

I think that is exactly right. It is always best for the home population to change things for themselves rather than rely on others, as this rarely works out for political, cultural or religious reasons. As for winning and losing, for sure the coalition have lost an endeavour to change things in Afghanistan, but in military terms the Taliban would not withstand a full onslaught if the decision was made to wipe them away. However, I do not think this was ever the intention, nor probably should it be.

Isn't this the sort of situation that the West developed nuclear weapons for ? The Taliban deserve it and sadly the rest of the poor sods who opposed them (especially the women) will be better off if it all ends quickly in a flash rather than the sadistic torture and downright evil that the bearded nutters are about to deploy.

Only if it abandons all pretence to impartiality. In todays climate echo chambers are preferred choice.

Just because you disagree with me doesn’t make what I say ‘semantics’ and you right. I stated what I believe to be factually correct.

We can complain and rant as much as we want from a Christian-Western perspective: But we should ask ourselves why the "bad" Taliban have achieved more in one month than the "good" ones (WE) with billions of dollars and 20 years of military presence have not?
I dare not even think about it, had all the money been invested in infrastructural projects, education, culture and social welfare....
But what do I know - except that my buddy Tobias would still be alive now...and thousands and thousands as well

I think there is going to be a lot of excuses used in the next few weeks in order to:
a)try and avoid any blame/responsibility for the disaster.
    b) under no circumstances admit it to be any form of a defeat. The 'one hand tied behind our backs' mantra will be used to keep up the pretence that whilst 'we' didn't win it was not a defeat.

I’m not an apologist for the US, the coalition or the British government. It is my opinion based on the facts as I know them.

Does anyone doubt a holocaust is about to be unleased on those poor people?

I have a feeling the west will be going in again soon when the videos, in color with audio, begin.

    Pray for them.

I very much doubt a Holocaust:
As a German I unfortunately know myself very well with it
Unfortunately, for those we have abandoned, the consequences will not look much better...
So much for our superior western civilization... or loyalty...or trustworthiness...

Might be a matter of Holocaust vs holocaust but I think there will a mass slaughter soon in Afghanistan. Maybe I used word incorrectly.

Holocaust? I should think that the term applies to a very specific context: Germany, 1939-1945, Jewish people...

Sadly the British and America media is jnfested by
Very wealthy woke persons/journalists informing us how terrible we all are if we dont agree with their one way inclusion.
This is the same for show biz
Very wealthy people trying to be right on and keep their funding base sweet.
So it is very difficult to sometimes break through or challenge their process without being called a certain type of person
Most of us know the papers or news channels that spout this.
Whichever newspaper is quoted we/you will never please anyone.

Obviously my above comments will offend some who have their own thoughts which is fine

However I am sure we agree which ever way we lean we dont like being manipulated on the forum

Sadly all the media is now telling us how the poor Afghan people will now suffer and we cant do anything about it.

Afghanistan, from the very beginning and now at the end, had all the hallmarks of Vietnam. The West cannot build a nation that does not want to be built, where corruption is endemic and where Western values are not wanted by all. We may have lost over 400 soldiers in the conflict but it would be stupid to return just to justify their deaths. We should stay well out of that country and, before we go anywhere near another third world country, dig out Robert McNamara's 11 lessons from Vietnam and read them.

    Regards

    Frank
