Thanks for the messages guys. Excellent photos Owen. I can foresee great problems planning my next trip. About the only thing agreed upon at the moment is fly into Charleoi. Whether its then WW1 related and off to Ypres or WW2 related and possibly into the Ardennes who knows.

    Many happy returns Len,
One of the better After The Battle books I reckon.
Wonder if newer editions have slightly better picture reproduction?

Did I mention I got mine for six quid... oh yes, I think I did... :p

    Hi Drew5233,
it was reading your trip reports, amongst others, that persuaded me to get the book.

    Whats your thoughts?

For sure the Then and Nows are EXCELLENT and I never get tired of looking at those and many have helped add a bit of fun to my trips to northern France. Searching for them has brought the location to life for me as to what happened on an exact spot some seventy years ago.

I did found the last 100 pages a bit hard going for me to finish (had to force myself to pick it up) for some unknown reason. Overall though I'm glad I've finished it and the most important thing for me is I learned something from it but for some reason I was hoping it would be so much more than it actually was - Maybe I'm comparing it to Sebags Dunkirk-Fight to the last man? Two completely different books.

    Whats your thought?

Only because it was about the French & not the BEF.

You are an obsessive who has no interest outside your BEF studies.

I've found it a great book that I couldn't put down & as you know have used it for many Then & Nows in Belgium & France.
I great introductory book into the whole camapaign.

Some Belgian Then & Nows here.

That about sums it up for me. Like all the ATB 'campaign' books, it's essentially a thorough & detailed list.
'This happened, then that happened', 'Here are some pictures & very detailed captions', 'here is a contemporary account' etc.
Brilliant stuff in their own way, but their job's not really to offer overmuch analysis, they provide solid grounding in a given campaign & you then have to read more to get deeper analysis of the wider whys & wherefores. You've already done lots on the Blitzkrieg Andy, so maybe you got round to it a tad late.

Owen's probably right though... you switched off after the BEF had gone. ;)

Have I mentioned my copy was £6 in a charity shop? Actually, I think I may have...

I did try not to allow the lack of BEF info not to influence me and as previously discussed with Owen I appreciate its written by a French author so it would have a French perspective.

On a plus I have purchased a couple of 1940 French focused books on the back of reading it. I think you may be right Adam that I've read it too late in the big scheme of things.
