I believe it's the American Battle Monuments Commission. According to some literature I picked up at the Normandy American Cemetery next to Omaha Beach a few weeks ago, the stated aim is to ...'maintain 25 American cemeteries and 26 memorials, monuments and markers in 16 countries. The Commission works to fulfill the vision.....time will not dim the glory of their deeds. '. Their web address is www.abmc.gov
abmc only lists casualties whose graves they look after. it will not list casualties whose bodies were repatriated back to the USA.
Thanks Owen that explains why I could not find the casualty that I was looking for. So as far as we know there is no similar listing as the CWGC?
David, try looking at find-a-grave. I have found a good many graves for men I am looking for. It is hit or miss, but sometimes is the option.
Nothing in the public domain, as far as I know. However, there must be other sources as there are some unit monuments at OMAHA with extensive rolls of honour (I haven't quite rationalised the 'certainty' of the rolls with the uncertainty of D-Day casualty numbers in most published sources).
Try the Veterans Administration National Cemetery Administration http://www.cem.va.gov They have a gravesite locator on their webpage-- it includes veterans buried in national and state cemeteries, national park cemeteries, and some others if there is a government-furnished gravestone. Not complete, but it's a good complement to the ABMC site.
