I came across this reference on the BBC Peoples War site http://bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/01/a8248601.shtml In it a veteran refers to joining the Y&L in 1938 'before it was converted to the Royal Artillery'. he then goes on to describe some of his war action details. I must confess to being very much a novice at research but the only reference I can find to a Y&L Battalion converting to RA is the 5th. But their subsequent action matches in no way what the gent described. Can anyone suggest sources to refer to, to try and track down what unit converted to RA that had the record he suggests? Maybe someone knows the answer already? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks. Mods, if this post should be in a more suitable location please move it.
Looks like he was 198 Bty of 67 (Y&L) HAA Regt (formerly 5 Bn Y&L Regt). The battery were permanently detached from the regiment and went there own way while the remainder went to Burma, tying in with his comments at the end of the article.
Thanks for the suggestion Idler, I will follow up along that line. Drew, I wasn't even aware there was such a thing let alone have one. If I had I would have looked at it rather than posting But thanks for letting me know what to look for!
Not the cheapest book in my collection: http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?an=sheffield&sts=t&tn=york+and+Lancaster War Diaries may be a cheaper option or I can have a look in the history if you are after something specific.
