    Deedale,

Are you aware of this book: 'Ours was not the Glory' by a Peter Johnstone who served in 152 Battery, 93rd Anti-Tank Regt, RA (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) in Italy? A 2021 post by Ray57.

From a 2011 post by Steve Mac two books which he had:
    History of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 6th Battalion 93rd Anti-Tank Regiment, R.A. (A & S H) (William Pratt Paul, 1949)

    History of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 9th Battalion 54th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, R.A. (A & S H) (Lt Col F R P Barker, 1950)

Thanks David. I was aware of the book by William Pratt Paul but unable to source a copy, well without paying an arm and a leg, and wasn't sure how appropriate it would be to what I'm looking for. I'll have a look at the others, thanks again.
Just had a nosy and nothing seems available, apart from the first one, which would be in the region of £150 including postage from abroad. Shame!

In the absence of the more detailed war records, does anyone know which war diary/ diaries I would need to request from the National Archives to understand this:

Unfortunately, it would seem that this unit (105 Base Canteen Depot) was a victim of the post-war decision to only keep representative copies of smaller units WDs and dispose of the rest. The one kept seems to have been 103 Base Canteen Depot - 103 Base Canteen Depot | The National Archives

    Hi All

Just to say I'm currently donating my fee for any diaries in my archives to the RAF Benevolent Fund charity. I'm supporting my 11 year old son's fundraising adventure this year to Germany where he'll cycle across Germany to the five dams involved in the Dambusters Raid, his fourth WW2 related fundraiser and hopes to reach £100,000 before he joins the Air Cadets.

Please direct anyone looking for a diary my way, with circa 5,000 complete diaries in my archives I may have the one they need.

Link below in case you'd like to donate :D

    Hi Andy,

I've been enquiring on WW2 Talk if anyone could look up and copy a couple of POW record card set at the National Archives and referred to this link from your good self. Presumably, not many other site users go there these days.

Just the visiting can take up a fair bit of time and with not getting any younger it can be a big effort. Anyway, if you can help these are the details of the two we're looking for, one having been taken prisoner at Dunkirk, 1940 and the second wounded and taken prisoner at Oosterbeek/Arnhem in 1944:

    WO 416/264/97, 7 cards (Rifleman John George MOSSOP, D.O.B. 17/10/1918, repatriated 1943);

WO 416/15/203, 4 cards (Private Richard HALEY GM, D.O.B. 21/01/1921.

The first, "Jackie" MOSSOP, was repatriated in October 1943 and discharged to die at home (D.O.D. 07/09/1944) and he isn't listed by the CWGC. The second, Dick Haley GM, was wounded and taken prisoner at Arnhem/Oosterbeek and eventually liberated by the Americans in 1945.

These are for local Roll of Honour/VE Day 80 commemorations, and if possible to try and get Rifleman "Jackie" MOSSOP commemorated by the CWGC.

If you are able to manage it, that's fine and if not because of time restraints or whatever, that's also fine.

    Regards
    JR

    Hello!
I am currently undertaking PhD research on the Resistance in the Lasithi region of Crete during World War II, with a particular focus on clandestine wireless networks and British intelligence operations. A central part of my research involves Operation Ironclad, an ISLD mission that took place on 2 May 1943, when HMS Parthian landed a three-man team at Makri Yalo Bay.
This operation is of both academic and personal importance to me, as my grandfather, Alexandros Gerolakis, was one of the three men landed during this mission. He was a Cretan resistance fighter who had been trained by the ISLD in Cairo for espionage and wireless operations.
I am trying to locate the file ADM 199/1832, which I have seen referenced in relation to submarine and Special Service activity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
If anyone could look up for anything related to the operation Ironclad (2 May 1943, Crete)/ HMS Parthian it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks again in advance.

    Hi,

I can get you this file - or part of the file - I assume you want the patrol reports for HMS Partian for April/May 1943?

My costs are £3 for the file + £0.12 a page.

Let me know - I might be able to get it this weekend.

    Regards,
    Gary.

Thank you very much!! I will do a mini research and I will tell you which file/date/operation name specifically I am in interested in. And of course you can do it when you will be available again. Sorry for the delayed answer, some work related issues occurred.

    Hi Drew,
I'm new here so please forgive me if I am doing this wrong.

My Grandad served in 179th Light Field Ambulance from the service record, which I have obtained.

From my own searching I think I need
    WO 177/772
    WO 177/773
to cover the war diaries for that unit.

There is a Returns and Reports document for the unit WO 222/587, would that contain any useful information on my Grandad's service?

I wonder if you can let me know if you could do copies of these files and if so how much they would be.

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Cheers

    Andy J.

    Drew,
I'm wondering if you (or anyone else) already has a copy of the war diaries for the 1st Battalion Welch Regiment from December 1944 onwards. My Great Uncle was an RA LAA Gunner who was transferred to 1 Btn Welch on December 2nd, 1944 so while I wait for his records I am trying to do some background research on the Battalion's movements during the period he was with them.
The reference from the National Archives for the Jan-May 1945 period is WO 170/5079
    Thank you
