Rare Battle of Arnhem 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment Survivors Medal, Paperwork & Photograph Grouping, who swam the Rhine to escape from Arnhem, the medals consist of 1939-45 star, Africa star with 8th Army bar, France & Germany star, Defence medal, 1939-45 war medal and Territorial Efficiency Medal named to 22536219 W.O. CL. 2 B.F.CANNON. RA., medals are swing mounted for wear. Accompanied by cloth and metal insignia, both wartime and post war Old Comrades Association etc. The paperwork with the grouping is very interesting, a copy of the book 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment 1st British Airborne Division Not In Vain 17th-25th September 1944 which was produced by the battalion from members who came back from Arnhem. Book is complete with the original compliments card and card postal cover addressed to Mrs F Cannon, 72 Hartley Rd, Luton Beds, very few of these books were ever produced and we believe were only available to survivors from the 3rd battalion. Also in the group are a number of local newspaper cuttings one which states that he escaped from Arnhem by swimming the Rhine river, also states that he had served in three previous regiments before joining the Parachute regiment, Royal Norfolks, Lancashire Fusiliers and the Royal Armoured Corps. The same newspaper article also reveals that his jump into Arnhem was not his first, he had actually taken part in an operation near Paris, one of the photographs in the group shows five men in uniform with large airborne wings on their berets, this was a common practice of members of the Special Forces in WW2. Other paperwork in the grouping include his commission in the territorial army as a warrant officer and a Lord Lieutenants Certificate of the county of Bedfordshire which states he was serving in the Bedfordshire Yeomanry. The photograph album in the grouping consists of various photographs of Cannon in uniform, both airborne and his previous regiments, a number of images show him and his brother, who served in the Royal Navy and is referred to in one of the newspaper articles. Album continues with images when he served with the parachute regiment including a group photograph of VMG Platoon 3rd battalion in 1945. Other pictures include studio postcard examples of some of his comrades in parachute uniform. Album soon moves onto the post war years where he seems to have served in the middle east, possibly Palestine. The photographs are housed in a modern album, some images are loose. ** The 3rd Battalion Parachute regiment was part of the 1st Airborne Division. The division was sent to Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden. The unit saw very heavy fighting during the nine day stand at Oosterbeek, the 3rd battalion was almost completely wiped out, with many of the men from the battalion being killed, wounded or taken prisoner of war. The few survivors of the battalion made it back to the UK, the unit was amalgamated with the 2nd battalion and were sent out to Palestine in 1945. The unit was disbanded in June 1948.

It looks like an excellent collection and it's great they provide some good photos to give you an idea of all that's on offer. I'm curious about the operation near Paris. What an estimated price though ... Whew!
