Last night was the longest cloud-free, moon-free, clear-sky night of the winter for us down here on the Sussex coast.

Keogram (one pixel wide vertical columns of over 1300 images against time) from about 1700hrs to 0730hrs.
    (North at bottom of chart)

Its amazing how many bright objects are visible in the night sky, even in the relatively light-poluted skies around Bognor!

This was early Friday evening, also in Sussex, beautifully clear and a totally perfect crescent moon. Sadly, all I had as per was my iPhone and it just would not properly capture the image I was looking at. These are the best I could get:

I can only assume that the very bright object directly above the crescent is a planet - to me it was too bright, too big to be a star.

Yes, it must have been Venus.
I've just 'wound back' Stellarium to Friday at 5:45pm and this is what is shows in the south west sky...

Actually, you should be able to do the same thing on their web version : Stellarium Web Online Star Map

That’s a great job Steve, thank you. Vast improvement on my shot.

Cheers. That would fit nicely. My top photo was taken at 5.35pm, the lower at 5.37. That’s a nifty website there.
