  1. My father was in New Guinea during WWII as an electrician, I was told. He never spoke of the war. I don't have any photos of him uniform. I don't really know much about Australians in New Guinea during the war and what he would have done as an electrician.

Can you provide his full name, possibly a service number??

  4. His full name was Athol Anthony Moran. I have no service number. My father never talked about the war. Only once he told me about having to dig in because he couldn't get to the bunker in time. I know nothing about the work he did there. He was an electrician all his life. He told me he was an electrician in New Guinea during the war. That's about it. He was born around 1928 at Black Springs (near Oberon) NSW Australia

Something is odd as if he was born in 1928 he would not be involved in WW2, in 1945 he would only be reaching 17 years old??

    Hi Annette,

There doesn't appear to be an Athol Moran on the Australian WW2 nominal role.

    Access here-

    World War Two Nominal Roll

Are you certain that he served in WW2 as if he was born in 1928 he would have been only fourteen years of age when the campaign in New Guinea started in 1942. By 1945 he would have been only seventeen years of age and unlikely to have achieved a trade by then.

Could he have enlisted under another name at a very young age? You may need to do some more background research.

  7. That's true. I think he was born then. I know his brother Fred Moran was 10 years older than him and he was born 1917. My father did speak of being in New Guinea. Could he have joined at 17 years of age?

  8. Thanks Scott. I see what you mean. I had never really thought about the numbers only what he told me.

  9. I know he left school very young and trained as an electrician. I think he said he trained at the age of 15. He never went by his name "Athol" everyone called him Tony
