Prior to the assault over the Wessem Canal (Operation Mallard) in November 1944 it was necessary to clear a minefield which lay in open ground WEST of the canal within 300 yards of PANHEEL LOCK (K691879). Clearance of this was necessary to enable 131 Infantry Brigade to capture the lock which controls the water level in the canal and this was vital to the 12 Corps bridging operations over the canal. Cpl. CHAPMAN and two others volunteered for this task which entailed 4½ hrs works in broad daylight within close range of the enemy. The party was exposed to small arms fire and mortar fire. One man was wounded and was taken back by Cpl. CHAPMAN who then returned to complete his task. By his determination and example Cpl. CHAPMAN cleared the area which enabled 1/7 Queen's Royal Regiment subsequently to capture the lock on 18th November 1944. Cpl. CHAPMAN continued throughout the winter and the battle of the ROER triangle to inspire his section by his courage and leadership in difficult tasks both of laying and lifting mines and on bridging and other Sapper tasks. He continued to be an example to all those under him until he was wounded during a bridging operation over the RIVER WESEL in April 1945.
