Award Distinguished Service Order Major-General Thomas Gordon Rennie, 5th Bn Black Watch(18139)

On 26th October after the 5th Black Watch had captured as strong enemy locality called “STIRLING” heavy casualties were being suffered from sniping by the battalion. Colonel Rennie personally directed an attack on the snipers, which was instrumental in establishing the Battalion on a commanding feature and largely prevented enemy observation along the whole from of the Division. In doing so he constantly exposed himself to considerable fire but with a complete disregard of danger continued to lead and direct the attack. The whole success of the operation was due to his fine example and leadership. Later in the morning he was wounded by a shell splinter in the neck but continued at duty and by his inspiration and example ensured that what had been captured was well and truly held and the enemy in this area completely dominated until they withdrew.
