On the 14th August 1944, Captain Bruce was working in the area Haut-Mesnil, when, in error, the area was subjected to bombing by Allied aircraft. Bombs set fire to six vehicles, some of which contained small arms ammunition and PIAT Bombs.

A soon as bombs cease to fall, Captain Bruce organised a part you salvage stores from the burning vehicles and succeed in saving a considerable amount before the fierceness of the flames forced him to withdraw with his part. Ammunition in the vehicles of a nearby unit was exploding at this time.

Immediately after this episode, Captain Bruce noticed these burning vehicles and saw that undamaged vehicles were mixed up with those were alight. Some of the burning vehicles contained 25 pounder ammunition and others small arms ammunition. Both types of ammunition were still exploding. captain Bruce, disregarding personal danger entirely, himself drove some eight undamaged vehicles clear of the area.
