Award Military Cross Lt. Brereton Robert Fairclough (86900) 4th Bn The South Lancashire Regiment, (The Prince of Wale’s Volunteers)

Second-Lieutenant Fairclough’s battalion was ordered to withdraw to la Haye on June 9th, 1940, but on its arrival there found the Germans already in occupation. The unit accordingly split up into small groups which made for the coast. As this officer was unable to obtain a boat, with a party of three soldiers, he made his way south into unoccupied territory, hiding at farms on the way, arriving at Agde, Herault on August 2nd, where the party was interned. In October Second-Lieutenant Fairclough was sent to Marseilles and three months later made his way to Tunisia. He was eventually fetched from Tunisia during a special operation and taken to Malta
