L/Sjt. Statham was acting Platoon Commander of 14 Platoon, C Coy, on 18th April 1945 when his platoon was ordered to attack a group of strongly defended houses. This group of buildings commanded an excellent all round field of fire and was supported also by fire from the village of BOCCALEONE. The strongpoint was causing havoc to the company and fire from it had already caused several casualties; Sjt. Statham, undeterred, led his men with speed and determination straight to the houses, silencing one machine gun himself with this TMC at point blank range. He then suddenly organised the clearance of the outbuildings and dugouts and toll the twenty remaining enemy prisoner.

The following night, L/Sjt. Statham was commanding his platoon when the Company cleated the rest of the village. The Germans reacted strongly with intense mortar fire and the situation for a time seemed doubtful. Once again L/Sjt. Statham rallied his men and his determination won the day.
