4129491 Tpr. Norman Jenkins, 1 Royal Tank Regiment, 22nd Armoured Brigade, 7 Armoured Division 10 Corps

On 9th April 1943 near SFAX (T.U.5829) Tpr. Jenkins was acting as gunner in his troop leader’s tank. The tank advanced on the flank of the squadron to a position overlooking an enemy column of tanks, guns and transport moving across the front at a range of only a few hundred yards. While the troop leader was organising the position of his troop. Trooper Jenkins took over gun control and engaged his target so quickly and accurately that he destroyed two 50mm Anti-tank guns before they could bring fire to bear on the rest of the squadron. He also destroyed three half tracked vehicles and five Motor vehicles.

During the engagement Trooper Jenkins climbed out on to the hull of the tank in order to assist in clearing a stoppage in the co-ax gun, at a time when the enemy resistance was hardening and the tank was being subjected to fire from its left front.

This trooper’s coolness in action and very skilful handling of the tank weapons was a fine example to his comrades and has set a high standard in gun-laying fir the regiment. I most strongly recommend him for the M.M.
