Award Order of the British Empire Lt. Jean Arnold SCHWAB, 44 Corps Staff, FRENCH ARMY

Lt. Jean Arnold SCHWAB, 44 Corps Staff, FRENCH ARMY, of 175 Boulevard Malesherbes, PARIS XVIIione, was captured by Germans on 22nd June 1940 and freed from captivity by the British at Lubeck on 2nd may 1940.

On 6th May 1945 he reported to OC 625 Military Government Detachment at LUBECK and offered his services, which were accepted. He took up his duties at once.

In Spite of having an opportunity to return home by air within a few days of his release (an opportunity by which almost all his ex-prisoner colleagues took) Lieutenant SCHWAB elected to remain in Germany and work for Military Government. He is married and his is at his home in PARIS.

625 Detachment Military Government arrived in Kreis Segeberg on 9th May 1945 with the task (under the orders of Commander 44th (Lowland) Infantry Brigade) of imposing Military Government on KREIS.

Since this date Lieut SCHWAB has worked for the detachment, handling legal and public safety matters, making investigations in conjunction with Field Security, and also acting as Interpreter on occasions of special importance. He has prosecuted at many Military Government Courts and has invariably been successful in securing a satisfactory sentence. His legal knowledge (he is a professional barrister and a member of Grays Inn) and his mastery of the English and German languages have been of the very greatest assistance to the detachment.

Lieut SCHWAB has carried out unhesitatingly and thoroughly all the duties assigned him and played a considerable part in the accomplishment of the Detachment's tasks in the most vital and difficult stage of the occupation. His self-sacrifice and devotion to duty have been beyond praise.
