Award Distinguished Flying Cross Lt. Cyril Cadle Tayler, A Squadron, No. 1 Wing Glider Pilot Regiment (174387)

In September 1944 this officer was detailed to pilot a Horsa glider during an airborne operation over Holland. Very adverse weather was encountered during the outward flight and Lieutenant Tayler was compelled to fly through cloud, the tug aircraft being invisible throughout. On reaching enemy territory, the weather improved but the combination was attacked by heavy and concentrated fire from the enemy's defences. The glider was badly damaged and Lieutenant Tayler was wounded. With great determination and courage he pressed on to the landing zone where, in the face of intense enemy opposition, he made an excellent landing. Lieutenant Tayler was an outstanding loader who consistently set his flight a high standard of operational efficiency. He died of wounds on the day following the operation.

Lt Tayler was the pilot of Horsa glider CN.140, which landed on the Johannahoeve on 19 September 1944. Mentioned in Despatches posthumous 11th April 1946

Died of Wounds 20th September 1944 aged 24 buried Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands
