Military Cross – North Africa, 5th Bn Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment, 153rd Infantry, 51st Highland Division, 30 Corps Operation Scipio

On the evening of 6th March 1943, Captain M.H.A. Stuart-Hamilton was in command of a force which was acting as a screen to the Battalion in the area of WADI .... . At about 1600 hrs the enemy launched an attack on the positions held by the screen. The attack was determined and was supported by heavy Mortar and Shell fire, most of which was directed at Captain. M.H.A. Stuart-Hamilton's Headquarters. Captain Stuart-Hamilton himself directed the defence which covered a wide area and meant considerable movement by him in full view of the enemy. He hung on to his position in a most determined way and inflicted considerable casualties on the enemy. His tenacity, coolness and courage were a great inspiration to the troops under his command and were wholly responsible for holding the position, which proved to be of great importance. He refused to withdraw although enemy tanks were situated on his left flank and it was not until first light that he eventually withdrew according to plan and was replaced by Standing patrols. Throughout, Captain M.H,A. Stuart-Hamilton's example and cool courage were of a very high order.

Bar to Military Cross – Sicily - 23rd Armoured Brigade

On the 18th July 1943 Captain STUART-HAMILTON was in command of the carrier platoon of the 5th Bn Black Watch operating with the leading tanks of this Brigade. The task given to the leading carriers and tanks was to locate and if possible, drive in the enemy outposts covering the ridge and high ground to the WEST of SFERRO. Capt. Hamilton's efficient handling of his platoon prevented the enemy Anti-Tank guns obtaining a direct shoot on to the leading tanks. During the whole day he was under constant and heavy artillery fire and often under M.G. fire. In spite of this he searched a large number of localities, engaged numerous bodies of the enemy and then brought back a number of German and Italian prisoners. It was largely through hit untiring energy and total disregard of danger that the bridge over the river DITTAINO was captured complete.
