    32 X reconnaissance boat
2 X Small Box Girder equipment sets
5 X Folding Boat Equipment boat units
2 X Folding Boat Equipment trestle units

The Assault Boat was a wood and canvas folding boat. It had a shaped bow and a square strn. When folded it was flat and had very little height so that twelve could be carried in each of the allotted 30cwt 6X4lorry. It could be erected very quickly. The sides were lifted and folding struts put in place to hold them upright.
    Length 12feet, 1½ inches.
    Width 4feet, 1inch.
    Weight. 174lb.
It had five paddles, one for steering.
    Carried nine men.

The Reconnaissance Boat was an inflatable rubber dinghy. It was intended for engineer officer’s reconnaissance of rivers or other water obstacles.
    Length. 6foot 8½ inches.
    Width. 2foot 8½ inches.
    Weight 39lb.
    Carried two men.
There were two rowlocks for oars and a wooden slat floor.
The boat and its accessories were carried in a canvas bag.

The Folding Boat Equipment MkIII could make a floating bridge made up of rafts consisting of two folding boats with trackway connecting them. There were also trestles and trackway to connect the raft bridge to the shore.

    The folding boat:
    Length. 21foot 10inches.
    Width. 6foot 8inches.
    Weight. 870lb.
    Capacity. Class 9.
Assembly of the boat was as for the assault boat.
The Folding Boat could also be used as an assault boat.

The Small Box Girder Bridge was shorter than the Folding Boat Bridge but could be put in place very quickly. It consisted of two girders, each with a centre section and two end sections. The girders were assembled on the near bank and were then pushed out across the obstacle. A nose beam with a wheel on the far end should support the girder until it was safely positioned on the far bank. The folding boats were carried on the framework of a specially designed four wheel trailer. The girders were carried in the towing lorries.
All the divisional bridging equipment was designed to be manhandled. It was unloaded, carried, erected and positioned using man power.

ROYAL ENGINEERS in an ARMOURED DIVISION

The War Establishment Tables for Royal Engineer units in an Armoured Division were published in early 1940. Engineers had been included in the earlier trials of armoured units throughout the 1930’s, and equipment had been developed to enable the armoured regiments to remain mobile.

The War Establishment for the Field Squadron in an armoured division is I/1931/7B/1. This was notified in ACIs for the week ending 28th February 1940.

The War Establishment for a Field Park Troop is I/1931/7C/1. This was notified in ACIs for the week ending 10th April 1940.

When these tables were published the 1st Armoured Division was still training in the UK and the 2nd Armoured Division was still forming, slowly. The support group of the armoured division contained the one field squadron supported by one field park troop.

1 Field Squadron and the Field Park Troop crossed to France on 16 May.

Much of the equipment was not yet available. Since 1st Armoured Division went overseas piecemeal and some units did not go at all it is difficult to find out exactly how the engineers were equipped. The following were not available.

-Armoured Caterpillar Tractor. There were very few Caterpillar tractors of any kind available and the armoured version was not yet developed. It did appear later and served well.

-The Armoured Personnel Carrier, Armoured Demolition Vehicle and the Armoured Mine Layer were all variants of the AEC 4 X 4 Armoured Command Vehicle. None of these had yet been delivered. On 13 April 1940 a contract was issued for thirty of each. All were intended for the Royal Engineers in an armoured division.

The chassis was as for the AEC Matador Medium Artillery Tractor but without the winch. A simple box shaped armoured body was fitted.

The Armoured Demolition Vehicle was intended for the destruction of bridges or roads under enemy fire. A pile driver was mounted at the rear of the body and operated through a hatch in the floor. A pneumatic drill and other tools were also carried. In action holes would be drilled in a road surface and the hole packed with explosives.

The Armoured Mine Layer carried a stock of mines which were simply dropped from the moving vehicle onto the ground through a hatch in the rear of the body.

The Armoured Personnel vehicle simply had seating for a section of sappers and stowage for equipment.

It was realised before any of the vehicles saw action that they were unnecessary or the result of wrong thinking. They were converted to Armoured Command Vehicles, in which role they were very successful and popular.

-The self launching bridge, or Scissors Assault Bridge was a MkV light tank hull carrying a 30 foot, 7ton capacity folding bridge. It had two trackways joined together with bracing and was hinged in the middle so that it could be carried folded. An engine driven screw first raised the folded bridge upright and then opened it and lowered it across the obstacle. Since the MkV light tank was obsolescent the project was cancelled in July 1940.

-Heavy Transporters of all types were very scarce and the Scammell 20 ton transporter was not available for this task.

-The 3ton 6 X 4 lorry for laying trackways was not available. It was a 20 foot, 24 ton capacity bridge with two trackways. Two such bridges were carried on a special body and when required one was connected to the front of the lorry and raised using a hand winch. It could then be driven into position and lowered across an obstacle.

In theory the scout cars were available but all those available were withdrawn for use in armoured regiments. There were not sufficient Boyes AT rifles to fill establishments.

    CORPS FIELD SURVEY COMPANY
    WE III/1931/20/2

Although northern France was well mapped this was not the case in many parts of the world. In any case commercial or government produced maps can never be absolutely up to date. The task of the Corps Field Survey Company was to carry out a survey of the corps area, record any changes to published maps and then either produce a new map or more often produce a map with changes overprinted.

In 1940 it was still envisaged that there would be a period of static trench warfare and accurate maps would be needed for the artillery.

    ROYAL SIGNALS.

The Royal Signals are on the border between arms and services. Originally the telegraph was an engineer responsibility, as later were telephones. The Royal Signals then became independent and although operating (not a pun) with front line units were regarded as a service. Officers of services cannot command combat unit and formations.

The principle on which all services operate is that the higher formation is responsible for providing the service to its subordinate units and formations.

    DIVISIONAL SIGNALS
    War Establishment II/1931/21/2

The Divisional Signals are responsible for communications down to the headquarters of infantry battalions, of artillery batteries and similar levels in other arms. The Divisional Signals are also responsible for communication between brigades, battalions etc.

    WIRELESS SETS

    Wireless Set No 3.
This was a medium range mobile set for communication between corps and division and line of communication.

    Range
On the move with a roof aerial 50 miles Morse 25 miles voice
Stationary with horizontal aerial 1000miles Morse

    Weight 18cwt.

This set was carried in a 3ton 6 X 4 lorry with a house type body and a chassis mounted power take off for a generator. Leyland Retriever and Guy FBAX were both used.

Wireless set No 3 was a versatile and reliable set.
    - It could be used as Low Power with a range of 8 miles in which case it used batteries.
    - It could be used as High Power in which case it required a Dorman 10hp engine and a Newton generator.
    - High speed Morse equipment could be used. This used punched tape and could send 120 words a minute.
    - Remote control and link to a telephone was possible using Wireless Remote Control Unit B.
    - The set could be removed from the vehicle and operated from a dug out or building. In this case a remote aerial could be used. The aerial control unit included two 100 foot cables.

A variety of aerials could be used.
    - On the move or for short range Roof Aerial No3 could be used. This was a complicated arrangement with four aerials each fitted between metal frames. Each of the frames was articulated so that in operation the aerial was raised three foot above roof level but if it hit an obstruction it lowered itself and then sprang back. The entire array could be raised or lowered using a handle within reach of the cab.
    - At a halt a vertical rod aerial on a roof mounting could be used. This used six foot sections to a maximum height of 24 foot.
    - When stationary and working long range a horizontal aerial slung between two 70 foot masts was used. The mast sections were carried on the vehicle body sides.

The wireless body was divided into two compartments. The smaller front compartment had a generating set mounted on rails and rollers so that it could be operated outside the vehicle. Batteries were stored on the floor. The generating set could be started from the operator’s position. The wireless compartment was larger. The set was mounted at the front of the compartment with the operator sitting in front of it. Staff could use the set via sockets at the rear of the compartment.

The 70 foot masts tended to give away the position of the wireless station, and the headquarters using it, so that it was usual to operate the set by remote control if it was being used purely for signals. The vehicle could be to a mile away from the headquarters and linked by telephone cable and remote control unit. Alternatively the vehicle could be situated at headquarters and the aerials sited up to a mile away.

    Wireless Set No5
This was a powerful static set for use on the Line of Communication. It consisted of three units plus ancillary equipment and could be transported in 3ton lorries. Several lorries were needed since the Low Power version weighed a total of 10tons. The High Power version, which may not have been used in the BEF, weighed a total of 20 tons. One similar Wireless Set ‘S’ (India) was used in the BEF.

    Range
Low Power Morse: 700 miles Voice: 200 miles
    High Power Morse: 2000 miles

Aerials were 300 foot T type between two 70 foot masts.

A Voice Frequency Keying Unit could be used with a Remote Control Unit to operate the set from a distance of 12 miles for voice or Morse. Usually Creed Wheatstone High Speed Morse Equipment was used to send Morse at up to 600 words a minute. Messages were typed onto perforated tape which was fed into the transmitter. Messages were received and printed onto tape.

    Wireless Set No 9
Originally developed for armoured fighting vehicles the No 9 set was more often used by divisional signals and mounted in a 15cwt truck. The set could be tuned to two different frequencies and channels could be selected by a two way switch. It was a well designed and well built set but not ideal for mass production.

    Range.
On the move . Morse 20 miles. Voice 10 miles.
Stationary. Morse 35 miles. Voice 15 miles.

    Weight 192 lb.

The basic set was a combined receiver/transmitter/supply unit in a case with a removable front cover. There were two types of carrier case, No1 with all three units mounted side by side and No2 with the receiver mounted on top ofthe other two units.

The complete wireless station could include any of the following
    - two 6volt accumulator batteries charged from the vehicle generator
    - aerial base No1 for ground use
    - aerial base No2 for vehicle use
    - aerial base No3 for light tanks but used also on other vehicles
    - remote aerial coupling Equipment B to allow the set to be used at a distance of 30 foot from the aerial.
    - remote control unit B allowing a second operator to use the set via a telephone handset and 100 yards of cable.

Aerials could be any of the following
    - 6 foot or 9 foot rod aerial made up of 6 foot and 3foot lengths of D rod. For vehicle use.
    - 24 foot rod aerial for ground or stationary used.
    - aerial, roof, No2. This had four horizontal tubes mounted on a frame which could be raised or lowered to avoid obstacles. It could be used on the move. This was used on Morris 15cwt House bodies. Generally replaced or supplemented by aerial base No3 and rod aerial.
    - aerial, roof, No5. This had four fixed horizontal tubes. These could not be raised or lowered but were protected by a headboard. This was used on Morris 15 cwt House bodies.
    - aerial, horizontal, B (Wyndom). This used two masts, each up to 48 foot high, to support an aerial of a length to match the frequency range. Range 1, 196 foot 6 inches. Range 2, 160 foot. Range 3, 127 foot.
    - Aerial, horizontal, end fed. This used the 48 foot masts with wire aerial to match the frequency range. Range 1, 240 foot. Range 2, 164 foot. Range 3, 120 foot. Range 4, 97 foot.

Vehicle stations were carried in a Morris 4 X 2 15cwt truck with a House Type body. The set was mounted against the front bulkhead of the body together with an operators seat. A charging set was carried in a compartment at the rear offside. The charging set could be used in the vehicle or away from it. Original 1937 vehicle used the Roof Aerial No 2. A second series of vehicles used Roof Aerial No 5. Later some sets were mounted in 15cwt GS trucks or 30cwt GS lorries and used rod aerials.

    Wireless Set No 11
This was a general purpose short range set. It was the first set to recognise that in service use the various sets in a unit needed to be netted onto the same frequency. This was made easier for the operator because tuning the receiver automatically tuned the transmitter also.

    Range.
Low Power on a vehicle with 6 foot aerial. Morse: 6 miles. Voice: 3 miles
Low power on ground with 9 foot aerial. Morse: 10 miles Voice: 5 miles
High Power on a vehicle with 6 foot aerial. Morse: 16 miles Voice: 8 miles
High Power on ground with 9 foot aerial. Morse: 20 miles Voice: 10 miles

The basic set was a combined receiver/transmitter in a case with a removable front cover. Power unite were separate and included
    - 6 volt accumulator battery in a wooden case and a 240 volt dry battery for portable ground station, low power.
    - 6 volt accumulator battery and a 6 volt low power supply unit.
    - 12 volt accumulator battery (usually in fact two 6 volt batteries) and a 12 volt low power supply unit.
    - 12 volt accumulator battery, a 12 volt low power supply unit and a high power supply unit.

Aerial base No2 was used for vehicles.
Aerial base No3 was intended for light tanks but was used on softskin vehicles also.
Aerial base No4 was for pack use.

The following aerials could be used
    - 6 foot rod for armoured vehicle use
    - 4 foot rod for armoured vehicle use
    - 9 foot rod, in 3 foot sections, for ground use
    - 21 foot rod for ground use. This could be held upright with insulated stays and pickets.
    - 6 foot or 9 foot rod for vehicle use
    - Aerial, horizontal, Type C (Wyndom). Horizontal aerials strung between 34 foot masts. Aerial length chosen to match the frequency range being used. Range 1, 95 foot. Range 2, 83 foot. Range 3, 70 foot. Range 4, 56 foot.

Remote aerial Coupling Equipment A allowed the set to be used 30 foot away from the aerial
Remote Control Unit A allowed a second operator to use the set via a telephone handset and 100 yards of cable.
Remote Control Unit D with D8 cable allowed remote operating up to 5 miles, or 10 miles with external batteries.

The following vehicle fittings were used
    Carrier No1 for 8cwt truck.
    Carrier No3 for pack animals.
Carrier No5 for armoured reconnaissance cars.

    Note.
Sound Ranging Troops, Royal Artillery used the Sender Sound Ranging No1 which was developed from the Wireless Set No11. A troop had five gun sound range microphones each with set to transmit the sound to a recorder at headquarters. Each outstation also had a No11 set modified to work on the same frequency as the sound range set.

    Wireless set No 14.
This was a command set for armoured units and was used in conjunction with a Wireless set no9. It was a short range intercommunication set which used voice only and had a range of I mile. There were four basic components which could be used in a variety of combinations but in command tanks at regimental headquarters they were limited to a transmitter and receiver mounted in Carrier No 2. The headquarters tanks were all on the same frequency on the No 14 set but on different frequencies on the No 9 set.

Aerial was a 6 foot rod.

    DIVISIONAL SUPPLY COLUMN RASC
    War Establishment II/1931/15/3

The demand for supplies is fairly simple to predict. The ration per man is known, the ration strength of a unit is known. There may be slight variations caused by detachments or casualties.

The Supply Column operates in two echelons delivering on alternate days. The general principle is that the echelon will collect supplies from the railhead depots and deliver to a supply point selected by the unit. Unit transport will collect supplies from the supply point.

At any one time there should be:
One days supplies with the unit.
One days supplies moving forward on echelon 1 for delivery that evening.
One days supplies at the railhead or on the echelon 2 for delivery the following day.

At this time the RASC transport was permanently assigned to particular units. There was no flexibility as with later RASC organisation.

There is not much difference between the RASC establishments for a Motor Division and an Infantry Division. There are some differences due to the Motor Division having only two Field Regiments RA and two Field Companies RE, plus the Motor Division has a Troop Carrying Company.

    MOTOR DIVISION AMMUNITION COMPANY RASC
    War Establishment II/1931/13A/3

    A possible cause of confusion:
Driver is the basic RASC rank, equivalent to private. He may not actually drive a vehicle. Many tasks are performed by drivers who are not necessarily Driver IC.

Driver IC is Driver Internal Combustion as opposed to a driver of horse drawn transport, of which there was none in the BEF.

    Mike.

I hope that the posts on the RASC organisation and supply system have illustrated the vital importance of logistics. From the earliest times food and fodder have been a major concern for generals. From the Middle Ages ammunition became vital also. The English armies in the Hundred Years War relied on a steady supply of arrows from England for the archers long bows. Later cannon and muskets needed gunpowder and balls of various sizes. In the 20th Century petrol was added to the list of essentials.

Of interest is the very precise allocation of vehicles in the RASC at this time. While suited to a static trench war it was not sufficiently flexible for mobile warfare.

For those who missed it there is a thread titled BEF Movement and Maintenance which covers the shipping, the ports, the base depots and the Lines of Communication.

I have added a list of contents to Post 1 above.

    Mike.

This is the last post of War Establishment tables for the time being. Tomorrow I hope to post details of the bridges and their components plus photographs of model lorries with bridging loads. I shall devote myself to gardening and looking at my neglected study of Napoleonic French and British armies. I do not think I can make such a study fit into a WW2 site.

I have greatly enjoyed revisiting the BEF.
