I'm trying to better understand the role of the Royal Pioneer Corps. My uncle was a gunner in the Royal Artillery with the BEF. He was lost at sea fleeing Ostend on the SS Abukir on May 28 1940. He is remembered at the Dunkirk Memorial as per the photo below - Thomas Taylor 911020 middle of the right hand column. As you can see, it says he was Royal Artillery as well as ATTD 13 Salvage Unit, Aux Mil, Pioneer Corps. How does this work? Can you be in one regiment and then posted to another? Were people simply reassigned duties in the chaos of retreat to the coast? Grateful for any help on this.

He was a gunner with the Royal Artillery temporarily attached to the 13 Salvage Unit, Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps. He may have had skills or knowledge needed by the AMPC at the time and was temporarily attached to them when he fell.

A bit about the Royal Pioneer Corps here-

Do you have his service records?

Thanks Scott - that’s what I thought. No I don’t have his service record - do you know how I can find it?
