I'd never thought to google it until tonight, but William Halliwell (killed in the plane) was my great (great?) uncle. I can't say I know all that much about what happened, but it was often talked about in my family and my mother if she had turned out to be a boy was going to be named after him.

We have a newspaper cutting about his death somewhere that I will dig out and I'll see if I can add anything to the above.

I've visited his grave many times as it is near the family home. It became a bit of a tradition for me that I would my poppy after November 11th by his grave.

Brian, I'm particularly interested to see your posts on here about the crash, I'll see if I can dig up anything interesting about Uncle Billy and I'll send it on to you.

Hi Mar.. sorry for the incredibly late reply, completely lost this web page... now tracing family tree and found out lots more, it does sound likely that this was indeed John (Jack's) plane. I would love to know if it were to visit, how much airfield is left ? you also mention that occasionally small bits of the aircraft turn up ! my dream would be to have a tiny piece, that would a tangible link to my uncle and so amazing ! I hope your still on this form ! many thanks Lindsay

Hi Lindsay , Mike and Mark B. Good to hear from you. I have just looked at the site again as it all went quiet since Jan 2016! I visited the main crash site in Sept 2016 which is by the William Farr school. The ex WW2 curator at the school, Brian Riley , gave us an excellent tour showing us the crash site where the communal buildings used to be for Dunholme Lodge Airfield then nearby in the school where you can see the concrete bases of some other buildings like the old gym etc. I also got the crash official report from the National archives I can send to anyone interested. My email is mark.herbert258@btinternet.com- tel 07796642792.

I took this in St Chad's church 2010. Didn't get any outside shots as there was a lot of scaffolding about. Inside as well.

    I took this one 1987-8. e7851d1e3711ca55671e65261c824fa3.jpeg

I took these inside the new school 2010.

Thanks all for the additional info. If I'm honest I forgot about this page and life got in the way, but I took a new interest in what happened to ED812 around Remembrance time so I'm planning to get back on doing some more research into it, and maybe get in touch with the William Farr school with some more info as I really like what they have on their website about it.

If anyone has any more info since we've been posting it would be appreciated!

Hi Herby, it's a long time since we both posted, and I don't know if you'll see this, but I was in Surrey yesterday (Remembrance Sunday) and stopped by to visit Neville's grave in Woking on the way to meet someone. Seeing the date 10th November 1943 the same as my great uncle's grave that I have seen so many times was a really moving experience, and to think what happened to all those young men in their prime. I'm going to try and visit some of the others as well, it feels like a fitting act of remembrance of their loss for me. All the best.
