I've had this picture for a while mainly because of the chaps face on the right (He looks like my 18 year old nephew). The shot was found amongst a mish mash of pictures that 'Life' have put their badge over but have no caption for it.

Can anyone draw any other information from the picture?

I'm not sure what the badge(?) is below the Div patch.

I didn't know they used 'Tac' Signs back then either.

That is in Bremen..... Look closely,.. and you will see that the identifying badge beneath the div sign is blotted out....

There should be a blue square with a number on in white, under the Div sign. Blue penciled out! My company uniform had a white 49 with a blue square background.

The two strips under the div sign should identify them... But it is Bremen. Ulster rifles? GREAT scrappers.

    The brigades are 8th, 185 and 9th.

8th brigade first. then 185. lastly, but not least, 9th brigade.
    8th 1 flash 185 2 flashes 9th 3 flashes.
8th Brigade nearly always led off....

RUR was from 9th brigade si that does not tie up with two flashes.
    That leaves the Warwicks
    The Norfolks
    Or the KSLI
    Sapper I fancy Warwicks

Later! This is not Bremen, it is "Lingen" And the troops are from the KSLI
Kings Shropshire light infantry of 9th Brigade. End of story...
    Cheers sapper

Same pic is in Assault Division , have a look Brian. It says Lingen,
    .
Can't agree with it not being 9th Bde though.
Brian get your copy of Assault Division out & look at the pics.
See pic of Monty give Sgt Sharkey of 2 RUR a medal.
He got two strips under his Div sign.
185 was junior bde not 9 bde.

I refer to this chart quite alot.
It's rather good & explains things well.
    Infantry Division Vehicle Markings
    Here's the 3rd Div units.
The squares with numbers were put on vehicles & road signs , not uniforms.

Interesting thread and good bit of research.

The photo is also excellent - interesting they are wearing their water bottles on the back, which is certainly a non-standard way for '37 web. I bought myself a set of '37 web yesterday at W&P and had forgotten how fascinating it is to fiddle around with it!

Posiibly staying with the same Div looking at the chart Owen posted above would these be KOSB's then?

The vehicles carry the number 61.

Quite like the look of this Corporal on the bike. I can't make out his unit badges but he has a commando dagger in his boot.

Don't forget other units also had 61, click the link to see which units in which Divisions had 61
Andy are those photos of Lingen or somewhere else?
61 would be KOSB in 3rd Div, they worn a square of tartan over the 3rd Div sign.
Well it looks like a cross on a square :)
Some good accounts of the battle for Lingen in Monty's Ironsides by Delaforce & Assault Divison by Scarfe.
Nearly all the units of 3rd Div get a mention in the accounts.
Good account of 2 RUR fighting in south-eastern outskirts of Lingen aided by Shermans & Crocodiles.
"9th Bde were completely established in the south of the town" to quote Scarfe.

    Owen,

These pictures that I found have no captions....They seem to have been 'hijacked' by 'Life' from somewhere and had their mark placed over the original photograph.

I don't even know if the Carrier and bike pictures go together other than the number 61.

Some of the chaps with the carriers are wearing what look like Tamoshanters (Sp)

    Been there, done that.

This one is a nice shade of green and it's staying that way!

    Look at NCO's stripe.
It's dark , just like issued to Rifle regiments.
    I'm sticking with 2 RUR.

    Certainly looks like it.

Why bother? We were the best anyway:)
My mates and myself....Even if we did look like bloody pirates. Young, handsome,Virile.
Eat your hearts out Girls... I am spoken for. Even bigger grin.

IF you think I am wrong about being the best?you take it up with the late Captain Edwards RE Who when he was alive, thought that there were none better than His Company...And of course, I agree. Totally!
    Sapper.
