Heres some reference information that I already have: 1st RTR - Egypt -1940 2 Vickers MkVIb's named Alsace and Aberdeen are painted in Caunter camouflage. They belonged to C Squadron. 1 A9 named Arnold was painted in Light Stone Brown. This tank was B Squadron. My question is, were the tanks of the other squadrons also painted this way, MkVIb's Caunter and A9's Light Stone. Or was it more of a mix? Another question. When these tanks were originally shipped out, and im thinking 1938-39 period. How were they painted then? I have some photos which look very much like they are one overall dark colour. Im thinking that they may have been still in the standard Bronze Green as used by the BEF forces. If so, when were they painted up to desert spec?
Just bumping this (I was sure someone would know, it got swallowed up in new posts, and I really need the info!) Also, I should of added in the first post, what markings did the tanks arrive in Egypt with?
You possibly need the MMP 'Warpaint' series, Dave. I was sure I had a couple, but cannot find them for the life of me.
They do appear to be just what I require, but as with all these type of books, they go out of print quickly, and then its silly money time. Volumes 2 to 4 you can still buy new, but volume 1 is harder to find (cue someone posting link to a bargain copy in mint condition!) I think its volume 1 I would need for the early war period, though I know the information is strategically spread throughout all 4 books!
British tank in Egypt, think is just pre 1938. Original photo from my collection. Thats the booklet you need as well.. Keith
I understand that the white cladding was asbestos! In an attempt to lower the internal temperature for the crews.
Heat insulation if I recall right, Morris? Something in Fletcher about it. Edit: Ah, sorry cross-post.
