Bogged down in the big muddy along the Gustav Line. LIFE magazine photographer George Silk made this series showing the slog near Minturno, Italy, May 1944.

    Thanks a lot brithm!
I haven't seen many pictures that clearly show the light rear armament position of the late B-24L or M versions.

    Thanks a lot Michel
nice to see a series of pictures from a recovery work showing the execution method, even the use of planks for protection of surfaces can also be seen.

Vehicular mayhem at Boulogne - caused by bomb craters from the RAF and USAAF - September 1944. Another Sherman tank was stuck when it drove up onto the overturned tank, but was removed before the photographs were made. One of the photo captions stated the upended vehicle was a Kangaroo, but it looks like an M10.

Unusual accident where King Tiger No. 311 tumbled from a railway flatcar when the crew tried to move it, August 1944. The wagons at the rear of the train were destroyed by Allied fighter-bombers, initiating emergency unload for the panzer crews. It was intended to carefully turn the tanks and drive over the side of the flatcar. No. 311 got stuck on the marching chains under the tank and nosed down, causing the tip over.

A railway crane later put the Tiger back on its tracks and the tank was taken under tow, but was soon captured by advancing U.S. forces. The officer shown in the pictures told the story as an eyewitness. He was wounded in the air strike; seen in one photo with his arm in a sling.

What is worse ? Being the rider who gets stuck or chosen as a 'volunteer' pusher ? That the language was colourful is pretty much beyond doubt. First-rate haircuts and undergarments, whatever !

Think I may have seen a Yewchoob vid on that.
If not the same, about equally catastrophic.

Again, a bit postwar (Life issue seems to be 1950).

This reminds me of a story in John Foley's fictionalized memoirs of his service as a Troop Leader in a Churchill unit "Iron Fist"
John Foley wrote about his Churchill sliding out of control down a snow covered slope and over the parapet of a bridge in the Ardennes in January 1945. He had left most of his crew before attempting what was a risky attempt with a 45 ton toboggan. He and the driver leapt clear when they lost control. The tank had landed right way up in a ravine. Foley and his driver went down to recover classified material before leaving the recovery to REME. To their surprise the tank started first time and they were able to drive up the sides of the ravine. Whether a true or tall story, it says something about the reputation of the Churchill.
