Is there anyone out there who would be able to estimate the enlistment date of a gunner in the Terrirorial Army from is RA number? I would guess he joined up in the mid to late 1930s Gunner Archibald Herbert Grey 895277 Died accident 27 January 1945 145 (Berks Yeomanry) Field Regt. R.A. https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2706735/alexander-herbert-grey/ Many thanks for any help Andrew
It seems that the 145th (The Berkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, R.A. was in Kent by January 1945, when it moved overseas to the Far East. The orders for the move had been received on 18th November 1944. The Regiment left East Grinstead in two special trains, to embark at Liverpool on 29th January 1945 and arrived in India on 23rd February 1945.
145 (Berkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment RA (TA) - The Royal Artillery 1939-45 Berkshire Yeomanry - Wikipedia 61st Infantry Division (United Kingdom) - Wikipedia It seems that he died in the UK the month before the Regiment embarked for India. As per #5 above. https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2706735/alexander-herbert-grey/ Regarding the original question when would he have enlisted. CWGC give no birth details. He was posted to a 2nd Line (Training) Regiment, which became part of a Training Division, so was either an older man who could train recruits, an immature (old enough to enlist but under 20 unable to go abroad) unfit for foreign service or the Regiment was up to War Establishment. In 1944 the Army had difficulty finding fit men for service abroad. He could have died at home from sickness in Jan 1945. Not unusual. If he died as a result of an accident he might have been about 19 when he enlisted. Correction see next posting #7 below: He was 23 in 1939
