A visit to Chepstow on Tuesday last with a couple of friends and former colleagues to pay our respects at a particular memorial.

The sun shone on the righteous remembered. The lucky, the fortunate, remembered those who can remember no more.

The WW2 Memorial plaque outside the onetime Rowntree/Nestlé works on Haxby Road, York:

    and in its fuller context:
    upload_2023-5-13_9-30-23.jpeg

The stone memorial was unveiled at the Nestlé factory in Haxby Road in 2010 so that members of the public could pay their respects to the fallen whenever they wished. This replaced the carved wooden boards, which had been on display in various areas of the factory since the end of the 1939-1945 conflict, now relocated within the Joseph Rowntree Theatre opposite.

In addition to those on active service, the York factory site manufactured munitions, as well as chocolate bars for ration packs, tins of dried egg and milk powder.

Joseph Rowntree's workers are also commemorated in his tribute gift to the community of the City's Memorial Park, opened in July 1921, to the Rowntree Cocoa Works staff who died or suffered in the Great War.

  11. This is the memorial in the Perthshire village of Meigle. It forms the entrance to a local park. It includes the name of Lt Cdr Wanklyn, VC, DSO and 2 bars. To the left is a wreath placed by the Scottish branch of the Submariners Association.
