My father was involved in the Battle of the Brigade Box at Villers Bocage with G Battery (Mercers troop) 5 RHA

Two Accounts .Differing slightly .One written another verbal of a Canadian Officer attached to our Infantry being killed.

The Infantry units present were 1st/5th and 1st/7th Queens and 1st Rifle Brigade.

Wonder if this incident is recorded elsewhere and possible to get a name?

    Verbal

They were snipped at continually all day taking casualties; A Canadian Officer crawled over to dads SP. "That bastard just got my Buddy; I know where he is lend me a rifle”. He climbed up onto dad’s SP/gun and was immediately knocked off, dead.

    Written in journals

The evening was approaching and we saw a young Canadian Officer attached to our infantry go out to attend his Corporal and get killed

I think these are the only Canloan's killed between 10-20 June 44 (assuming he was a Canloan) Noiseux seems the strongest date wise - he was with the Hallams who I think were 49th Div

Searching, records show that between the 13 and 15 Jun 1944, Canada had 94 casualties world wide.

Of those 6 were officers. Of the 6 two died in Canada, one died in Italy.

So we have 3 officer possibilities (unless I have the wrong date, you can confirm). Of the three, One Major, One Captain and one Lieutenant.

TWO of the Officers were CAN/LOAN so their were with British Units….

I’m checking them now to see if I can get more info………as you can see from the above, the Lieutenant in the records, also has a PRIVATE who died in his unit the next day (maybe died of wounds???)

    Report on what I find

I checked Noiseux's service file but it doesn't add any details of his death that could help - I think the Brigade Box fighting was about the 14th-16th (just happen to have been looking at it yesterday)

I have a dim recollection of one CANLOAN officer being wounded on the 12th on the way down whilst comparing weapons with an American patrol.

The Brigade Box battle was 14 June as we withdrew that night.

In case you’d like to search further thru CanLoan officers, this link gives you a list of CanLoan Officers and their assigned units (and if they were casualty)

CANLOAN – Officers with British Regiments | SWWEC

And a statistic about the CanLoan scheme

Six hundred and twenty three (623) Infantry Officers, together with fifty (50) Ordnance Officers, whom the Royal Army Ordnance Corps were anxious to have, volunteered and served under the CANLOAN scheme, a total of six hundred and seventy-three (673) in all.

    CANLOAN Casualties:
Killed in Action or died of wounds 128 (20%)
    Wounded 310 (50%)
    Prisoners of war 27 (5% )
    Total Casualties 465 (75%)

Thank you all for your answers so far ,
I asked the Question for a Canadian friend who will be doing the Normandy tour later this year.
Even if I do not answer the question I will be able to pass on a wealth of information ref Canadian Officers..
Will start to work my way through Answers tomorrow

By date the only candidate would be Captain Noiseux but the Regiment he is attached to is wrong...
I am sure it is a true account and have learned over time that many unlikely things turn out to be true .I once scoffed at a workmate who had been in the RN. and told me he jumped at Arnhem. The war diaries of both Battalions might help if I can access them.
