The above officer arrived to join the 9th Royal Sussex about April 1943 when they were in India and about to undergo training with Combined Ops. He served with them in Burma throughout the war. An internet search shows an entry on Ancestry Australia giving his dates as 1919-1981. There are photos of him and a press cutting which I cannot access as my library is closed. We think this man was in another Regiment before joining the 9th Btn, and know he was mentioned in despatches. Hoping that the press cutting might reveal more. Have searched the British Newspaper Library for a mention but no trace. Can anyone assist?

Newspaper cutting - with a translation below it Their many friends in Denton will be pleased to learn of the success in the Army of two brothers, John Hulme and Norman Eric Hulme, sons of Mr and Mrs Joshua Hulme, 243 Stockport Rd, who have both risen from the ranks and obtained commissions. Norman Eric is 23 and volunteered for the Army in October 1939. as a recruit he joined the Grenadier Guards and his fine record won him promotion as sergeant-instructor. Later he was recommended for a commission and was gazetted to the Lancashire Fusiliers. His brother, John, is 30 and joined the Army in May 1940 in the Northamptonshire Regiment. He also attained the rank of sergeant and was recommended for a commission which he has now obtained with the 1st Manchester Regiment. Both brothers received their education at Russell Scott School, and on leaving Eric was employed at Bevan Brothers, hat manufacturers, whilst John was chief clerk to the Medical Officer of Health at Enfield, Middlesex. They were both prominently associated with Christ Church, Eric being a member of the choir. They are also both keen sportsmen, Eric being a playing member of Denton Cricket Club and Debdale Tennis Club, whilst John assisted Christ Church Cricket Club. Their father is also a well known sportsman and has brought many honours to Denton TD

Thanks very much for all this. The photos are excellent.Am glad of the translation of the cutting as well .No mention of Royal Sussex though .Had hoped that might have a mention but I expect it is a relative who has limited knowledge of his army record. We know about the Royal Sussex connection from the Shiny Ninth by Murray Gillings where there are several references to him.It also mentions hisMID but as usual no details. Not sure what the long gap is between death and probate is all about. So grateful thanks for such a swift response.
