4976561 Edwin KNOWLES of 8 Platoon C Company 11th battalion the Parachute Regiment - on 18/9/44 during the run in to the DZ on board Dakota 42-100896 it was hit by AA fire crashing to the West of Wageningen, most of the platoon got out by Edwin along with 7 others Paras and 3 of the US crew were killed - Edwins body was never recovered and was considered to have been lost in the fire. These 2 books seem to relate to his time in 1939 with 9th Sherwood Foresters. His Brother James William Knowles was killed in 1943 with the Sherwood Rangers at Wadi Zem Zem

    Thanks for sharing.

Looks like he joined up as a Boy Soldier before his 16th birthday. Didn’t turn 19 until 1941 so likely didn’t see any active service before then - possibly posted to a Young Soldiers Battalion?

2056382 Alfred Claude NICHOLSON 305 Battery, 46 AA Battalion RE (5th Lincolns) who was accidentally shot by a comrade 14/2/40 and died 16/2/40 - this comes with a very useful write up from the Orders & medals research society (see below - it cost me more than a Pizza I'll add) which fleshes out the details

14758599 John Johnstone Alexander BULLOCH 9th Cameronians, suffered a head wound 15/2/45 at Moyland (his first action) and succumbed to these wounds 23/2/45 - going by his last diary entry the impression given is that the wound wasn't too bad, but it must have been.

War Diary for the 15th at 9am has D Company moving off and being heavily mortared and comms being lost - Rfn Bulloch was a signaller so all seems to tie in with him being wounded in this incident - Microsoft Word - 9 C - Feb 45 (15thscottishdivisionwardiaries.co.uk)

7611931 Fred TANSLEY, RAOC with the Light Aid Detachment of 124 Field Regiment RA, he died 12/12/42 from a gun shot wound to the head/skull fracture, the casualty returns show him as "died result of accident" the War Diary for 124 Field doesn't have anything relevant for the day and they weren't in action

2000850 Alfred Francis HARKNETT, 3rd Cheshire Field Squadron RE - Cpl Harknett died of wounds 24/10/1942, he had been wounded on the night of 23/24th when his squadron were part of the Minefield Task Force clearing paths in the opening stages of 2nd Alamein, they were working on paths "Ink" & "Boat" - the War Diary records casualties from an enemy post before it was subdued by the Māori's which is potentially where he was wounded

14212192 James Lewis PARTRIDGE, 11th RSF, 11/9/44 killed during the attack on Le Havre - CWGC and casualty lists have him as 6th RSF but as can be seen at the top right it shows him as 11th Battalion, the fact he's buried in Le Havre beside a couple of 11th Battalion men and the 6th were resting at that point seems to confirm it

1555433 George Baird VALENTINE a Flight Engineer with 625 Squadron who was killed 3/4/45 along with the rest of his crew when their Lancaster NG237 crashed Visbedden during a raid on Nordhausen - their is an official letter with the group saying the Lancaster was struck by lightning, but there is some speculation on other forums that the main cause of the loss was flak damage. F/Sgt Baird was on his 7th Op of his 2nd Tour - his first Tour was with 576 Squadron in the first half of 1944. In the photo below he is Front Right
