I had the pleasure of knowing a Cameronian veteran who was involved in the days fighting, Hugh McCumisky told me it had been a fierce fight and 2 of his best friends were killed that day Rfn's Morris & Martin - both are commemorated on Motherwell War Memorial and are buried beside each other in the row behind Rfn Tate.

War Diary entries for that day, at 4.10 there is mention of an OPA's death - as Joseph seems to have been the units only death that day its seems likely this is him.

7394281, Private Roger Adams of 196 Field Ambulance 18th Division, he died of Diptheria as a prisoner of the Japanese on 19/07/43, born 23/09/20, enlisted 16/01/41. This book wasnt filled in until after Private Adams death, apparently only being done to give something to return to his family - its possible his original was with his effects to be returned but as Diptheria is infectious the details were copied over an the original destroyed.

An extract from Bowyer's book "The Stirling Story".
    ".............Six Stirlings failed to return.
Included was BK760-X of 7 Squadron, flown by S/Ldr Chesterman. Arriving fifteen minutes early at the target, his aircraft was hit three times by AA fire before it attacked from 17,000 feet. The aircraft was hit again again heading homewards, then the rear gunner reported searchlights following it. When very low over the village of Bree in the Maescyck area a searchlight illuminated the bomber and light machine gun fire riddled the central and forward parts of the fuselage. Then a fighter raced in to finish it off and set fire to at least four of the wing tanks. A second strike probably killed two gunners.
BK760 then briefly climbed before plunging into a canal. Sgt. Ferguson, the flight engineer, and Sgt. Moore, the navigator, escaped and evaded capture."

908279 bombadier Roy Faulkner Newell was a member of 132 (Glamorgan Yeomanry) Field Regiment RA as part of 78th Division when he was killed in North Africa 26/02/43 CWGC :: Casualty Details at age 23 (22 on his casualty card).

edit: At this time the Germans were heavily attacking the Divisional forward positions.

Sir Harry Secombe served with the same Regiment during this period.

I've just got hold of Sir Harry Secombe's Autobiography "Arias and Raspberries" and in it he has a scan from a diary he kept during the War, this is also included in the text, he says he was a day out in his notes and on 27th February has "party started at 4 o'clock in the morning. lasted throughout the day with terrifc casualties for Jerry. Capain reader and Newell killed by a mine"

War Diary entry mentioning the death of Capt Reader (no mention of Newell but the above links the 2)

French, Alfred Frederick 1665144, 53rd Medium Regiment Royal Artillery, died 31st May 1940 aged 37
L/Sgt French had been a pre-War RA member recalled to the colours in 1939, for history of the unit in WW2 see BBC - WW2 People's War - Army: 53rd (London) Medium Regiment Royal Artillery which talks about the arrival of these reservists. From that page it seems likely that L/Sgt French was amongst the casualties while the unit was acting as infantry on the perimeter on the 28/29th and died of his wounds on the 31st, as amongst his items was a letter saying he had wounded (the unit seems to have stayed together as a coherant group) - although of course it was a confused time so the date could be wrong.

Edit: L/Sgt French has been discussed here http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/1940/28308-53rd-regt-r-1940-war-diary.html

    1886002, Lennox Tod Anderson, born 22/3/19, enlisted 16/10/39, kia 25/9/44, age 25
Number 2 detachment 261 Airborne field park company RE, attatched 1 Para Squadron RE- Landed 18/9/44 his detachment failed to make contact with 1 Para Squadron, they then joined with 9th Field Company in area of Sonneberg house where they remained until evacuation. Sapper Anderson was killed by a mortar bomb during the evacuation, his body was recovered from the Rhine at Amerongen in October 1944 (details from unit war diary & roll of honour)
    CWGC :: Casualty Details

Sapper Lennox Anderson is an interesting case as there is a war Crimes investigation file (WO 309/1026) which indicates that he was killed on 7th April 1945. This has been reported to CWGC but they refused to amend their details. It's strange that his AB64 has survived in such good condition if he ended up in the river.

Hopefully these postings are of interest and I'd be interested in any feedback, over the next few days I will go back over them and tidy up some odds and ends as I have more information on some that I need to scan and I will also try properly credit sources. I'm always interested in obtaining other service and paybooks if anyone knows of any on the go,or even just scans of interesting ones.

    Thanks for looking

Very interesting John, is there any background as to who Killed him and why?

Being killed in the Evacuation seemed to be the common theme when I looked around on the net and in books - also the pencilled unit/date in the book (seen in most of the books) I believe was added by the authorities at the time and goes with the evacuation story. The book is in reasonable condition but that could be due to it being well wrapped in a gas wallet or similar.

I'm always open to new information - surprisingly quickly received in this case.

    Regards

    Alistair

The War Crimes file states that he was brought to a German building in Amerongen on the back of a cart after having been shot and was laid on the lawn covered by a tarpaulin. The local grave digger was called upon by the Germans to bury the body. If the date he gives for that burial is correct and Anderson had drowned on 25/26th September and only just recovered it would have been badly decomposed by then and I am certain that the gravedigger would have mentioned it.
