I have obtained a copy of a rare book "Normandy to Nijmegen" by Edgar Primrose Dickie MC, DD. It is a history of the Canteens of the Church of Scotland with the British Liberation Army.

Interestingly chapter VIII is titled "S.A.S.". The chapter begins "At that time the youngest branch of the army was perhaps the most interesting". The chapter goes on to describe how they sent out mobile NAAFI style trucks to the 1st SAS.

One paragraph in the chapter was of particular interest to me, it reads -

".... They certainly did see the fun of it all. A boy from Bo'ness parachuted down landed on his head, and was knocked half-conscious, so the Harthill man, his nearest companion, took him in hand. They had to make a compass-march through the enemy lines, and Bo'ness, thinking he was speaking in a general whisper, kept on shouting with all the force of his powerful lungs, "I'm all right Jock; keep going on and I'll follow; just keep going; I'll follow; I'm all right, Jock". And Harthill had to keep on whispering "Haud your tongue, Willie; yon's Jerries over there." But Bo'ness would shout, reassuringly, "I'm as right as rain , Jock; don't you worry; keep right on to the end of the road. And I'll follow. Good old Harry Lauder".

I have a no record of any man from Bo'ness or Harthill serving in 1st SAS. The only man I have recorded from Bo'ness is George Hill who was 2nd SAS.

Does anyone have a record of any men from either Bo'ness or Harthill who served in 1st SAS ?

    Best wishes,

    Ian
