Conversations or the old PM's

On the previous software we had PM's, but there was also a maximum number so as the percentage bar approached 100% we had the ability to 'delete' PM's and thus create more space for the future.

This seems not to apply in the case of 'conversations' in the new software, can we therefore have as many as we want? I, as yet cannot find a way of 'deleting' any conversations if there is indeed a need to do so

Thanks to those who can answer these sort of questions

I think you just hit "leave conversation" at the top of the page and it deletes the conversation

On your Conversations list, tick box next to the one you want to delete and a drop-down menu will appear, select Leave Screen Shot 2016-11-22 at 18.54.51.png

You will be given 2 options.
Select whichever you prefer and then click Leave Conversations.

Or as Lesley says you can select Leave Conversation (right-hand side) if you have already opened one.

OK that works - would have thought 'delete conversation' was more appropriate than 'leave conversation' but hey ho

    Thanks guys

Well I suppose this system also this gives us an option we never had before. Should we 'delete' at our side, and someone replies after, we couldn't previously opt to receive that reply.

I should also point out - if you leave a conversation, the other participant(s) will have no idea that you have 'deleted' it from your list. As far as I can tell, no notifications are sent out.

I can read other people's conversations (I don't though), but don't tell anyone! :cop:

No sure if this is open to all. It appears not to be PM's; can't remember what we called them on the old, old forum...

I think you mean VM's, profile messages, profile posts
Yeah this and the last software package allowed access by all to messages swapped via profile pages. They aren't open to guests, i.e. non-members or accessible to SEs either. In other words in order to access them you have to be registered and logged on.
I think folks can tweak with Privacy settings via their own profile page, but I personally haven't bothered testing that.

I'm not doing a how-to for that. If anyone's that nosey they can stumble upon the method themselves ;)

There doesn't appear to be a limit on number of Conversations/PMs.
Or any way of setting such that I can see on a brief glance.

The impression is, that this software handles Conversations/PMs in exactly the same way it does threads, just with user to user privacy.
One system to manage all transactions, rather than PMs as a bolted on thing.

    That's just an impression, though.
Will have a delve in settings later.
(Not intending to put a limit on! Though it's always possible there might emerge a storage reason for doing so - would give fair warning if that were the case.)

Whilst on the subject of messages. I think (can't confirm) old messages are automatically deleted??? I'm sure one or two of my really old messages have disappeared.

    I do mean VM's, Diane.

When the new platform came on line I muddled through it's functions and found some 'new' ones; that were not available on the old or old old platforms. This VM visibility was one such function.

Strangely, I don't look in because I feel to do so would be invading other peoples privacy. That, and I've never liked curtain twitchers! :D

    Best,

    Steve.

Might indeed be a time-expiry aspect. Haven't had another look at settings yet, but think there may be something about that in there.

Just a reminder that members must have at least 5 posts before they can "Start a Conversation".

  15. There does not appear to be a limit on the number of posts in a given Conversation either, which is also good. A couple of members and I are having a chat that now extends to 64 pages over a little less than 2 years now.
What would be even better would be to extend the editing time window beyond the current 2 minutes, because we often find ourselves posting our response before it is complete when pressing the wrong button, and 2 minutes is usually too short to complete the correction...

I'll try and remember to look into that.
Thought it was the same almost infinite edit time as for posts but if not there should be a setting.... somewhere.
