The horror of wartime experiences can creep up on you in all forms of ways.
Most soldiers returning to N Ireland carried on with their lives without councilling. The only advice offered and the policy followed was, "to leave it all behind you".
    Many times that didn't work.
Charlie T had a wife who was house proud, she kept everything spick and span. About one week after Charlie returned home from his six year war, he went to the outside loo. His wife had just finished cleaning it out. Charlie never finished what he started. He came out white as a sheet and said to his wife, "Whatever you are cleaning the toilet with, stop it now".
His wife had scrubbed the concrete floor with lime.
That reminded Charlie of the lime thrown over the bodies in Belsen before they were buried.
