    Asking for some help here with map reference for field graves in Holland. I never learned how to work out locations. :rolleyes:

    CWGC return states:

    West side of main road
    GSGS 2541
    1/100000
    Sheet 5
    701658

    This, I am guessing, would be somewhere between Lent and Elst. I happen to have a sketch map with rough location, drawn by the person who dug the field graves, so it would be nice to confirm.

    Hello D,

    GSGS 2541 - refers to the general area covered by the map, Holland.
    1/100000 - is the scale
    Sheet 5 - is the detailed sheet within the general area, in this case S'Hertogenbosch.
    701658 - is the grid reference, 701 being the easting, 658 the northing.

    Looking at this online copy of GSGS 2541 sheet 5:

    the given location is west of the railway line and main road and near Fort Lent, just north-west of Lent itself.

    Just to check that I've followed correctly
    the location is in this grid, (to the west of the road SE/NW) at the intersection of 70.1 and 65.8

    The map is 6SW, dated 1943 and you are correct. Orchards or Nurseries.

    Hi,
    I did not want to impose on DBFs post but I have a similar question.
    If two soldiers have the same reference is it fair to assume they initially shared a grave or just a map reference ? It does state Grave 1 and Grave 2 but I just need to check.
    I took a look at Verrieres Uncle but found another soldier from a different battalion had the same initial reference? Sorry but whilst I can understand Scale I cannot work out what this means or where it is on a modern map?

    Hi Kyle,
    I wouldn't have minded you adding to the other thread. It can still easily be turned it into a general enquiry thread for these matters ...?

    Anyway, just to say that the single map ref given in my example was for 12 individuals on the same sheet of paper. And to be specific, single field graves were definitely dug for each of the dead who were mentioned in the account given to me.
